It is believed an altercation occurred on Tuesday which resulted in a 35-year-old man being stabbed once in the torso.
He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said on Wednesday that the people involved were not partners but likely knew each other, and at that stage a weapon had not been identified.
"It is certainly not a spousal, partner or some sort of situation like that, Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn said on Wednesday.
Later that evening police confirmed in a statement that the accused and the victim were known to each other, which they had speculated was the case earlier in the day.
Police did not comment further on whether a weapon had been located.
The woman will appear in Queensland's Southport Magistrates Court later today.
