Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King, Constable Glen Humphris and Constable Josh Prestney died when the truck crashed into them while they were dealing with a Porsche driver in an emergency lane on Melbourne's Eastern Freeway at Kew.

The four officers had been standing in the emergency lane of the freeway as they prepared to impound a Porsche 911 that was being driven by 41-year-old Melbourne mortgage broker Richard Pusey.

It was alleged by police that Mr Pusey's Porsche was being driven at 149 kph when they made the decision to pull him over.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said on Thursday that the truck appeared to have moved from the right-most lane of the freeway to the emergency lane shortly before it hit the officers while travelling at 100 kph.

The officers all died at the scene.

The alleged driver of the truck, from Cranbourne, had been hospitalised since the Wednesday night until Sunday night and was questioned by police.

He was charged after a joint investigation by the major collision investigation unit and the homicide squad, a police statement released early on Monday morning said.

He is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Police had earlier conducted a search of the truck driver's house and on Thursday said that "what was found at that premises is still the subject of ongoing investigation".

Mr Pusey has been charged with multiple offences including reckless conduct endangering life, failing to render assistance and drug possession.
