There is just one state left to be called as a win for either Donald Trump or Joe Biden in the US election: Georgia.

While some major US networks have declared a Georgia victory for Mr Biden, the ABC has not.

That's because the ABC is being guided by the projections of syndicated news agency Associated Press (AP).

AP has not yet declared a winner in the state.

AP does not call a race that is — or is likely to become — subject to a recount.

Georgia recount due by Friday

Georgia election officials last week announced a recount in the state, with election workers starting the process of counting the votes by hand on Friday.

After the first count, Mr Biden was leading the race by about 14,000 votes.

The state's laws allow a candidate to request a recount if the victory margin is less than 0.5 percentage points.

The recount deadline is Friday, November 20.

It's unlikely AP will call the state until then, with the agency previously saying it will reassess the situation once the audit is complete.

What happens if Trump wins Georgia?

Nothing that will change the overall outcome of the election.

It might make Mr Trump feel a little better about his loss, but a victory in the state will not secure him enough electoral college votes to retain the presidency.

As it stands, Mr Biden is projected to win 290 electoral votes, well above the 270 needed to become president.

Even if Mr Trump ends up winning the 16 electoral votes up for grabs in Georgia, he will only end up with a final tally of 248.

What happens after the recount?

The states have until December 9 to settle any disputes over the election result, including recounts and court contests.

Once that deadline has passed, each state's electors have until December 15 to vote by paper ballot.

These are then counted and the electors sign six Certificates of the Vote.

Those certificates, along with other official papers, are sent by registered mail to various officials, including the president of the Senate by December 24.

The Lower House and the Senate will hold a joint session to count those electoral votes on January 7.

When a candidate receives 270 or more electoral votes, the President of the Senate will announce the results.

Inauguration day is on January 20, when the winning candidate will be officially sworn in as president.
