Residents have again been put on notice to evacuate Fraser Island with a bushfire raging out of control, as the Queensland Premier announced a review of the island’s management.
Firebombing continues across the heritage-listed island, some 250km north east of Brisbane, where some residents have fled while others are on ‘watch and act’ or a ‘prepare to leave’ warning.
Several fires have raged on Fraser Island since mid-October and on Wednesday Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the inspector of general emergency management would conduct a full review into the management of the island.
“He will examine all aspects of preparedness and response,” Ms Palaszczuk told Parliament on Wednesday.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) on Wednesday issued a ‘watch and act’ a warning for a fire near Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village on K’gari with conditions likely to get worse.
The warning stated in bold that residents “should not expect a firefighter” at their front door.
“Currently as at 7.45am Wednesday 2 December, a bushfire is travelling from Boon Boon Creek south towards the Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village,” the warning read.
“Extensive water bombing yesterday was effective in slowing the spread of the fire. Water bombing is planned to continue throughout today. Conditions remain unpredictable and can change rapidly.
“Multiple fire crews are working to contain the fire but firefighters may not be able to protect every property. You should not expect a firefighter at your door.”
The latest blaze at Fraser Island is believed to have been sparked by an illegal campfire.
A large part of the fire is within inaccessible land meaning aerial firefighting is a crucial part of bringing it under control.
Ms Palaszczuk said more than a million litres of water had been poured over the flames and watching Fraser Island ablaze was “so painful.”
“It's understandable those who love the island want to be assured that everything that could be done to protect it has and is being done,” she said.
“That's why I can confirm that the inspector general emergency management has been instructed to conduct a full review.”
