A man has been rushed to a medical post after being bitten in the leg by a shark at a holiday spot in Western Australia’s north-west.
The attack occurred about 12.15pm off the coast in Coral Bay, a popular family-friendly snorkeling spot 150 kilometres south of Exmouth in the state’s Gascoyne region.
The man was taken to shore by a boat and taken by St John Ambulance to the Coral Bay nursing post on Robinson Street, where he received treatment for an 8 centimetre gash to the calf.
The injury is believed to be non-life-threatening.
It is unclear whether the man was snorkeling at the time.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged members of the public to take additional caution in the water and adhere to any local beach closures advised by authorities.
“If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600,” a department spokesman said.
“All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app, and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.”
It is not the first time a person has been attacked by a shark at the popular tourist destination.
