We have one more race for Melbourne Cup Day.

Race 10 will be run over 1,200m.

Jockey Jamie Kah has ridden Larkspur Run to victory in Race 9.

Literary magnate was second followed by Mac 'N' Cheese.

• The omen pick of the day. Wet form good, has form at the track and the distance and is a Ciaron Maher/David Eustace mare

• Omen pick. Why? Because between myself and Andrew we have one winner.

We have a Group 3 race over 1,400m.

Looks to be an open race with plenty of strong candidates for victory.

Earlier in the day, our photographer Darryl Torpy was catching up with the crowds at Flemington.

It's the first Melbourne Cup for Cara and Scott Connor, who drove for more than five hours from Griffith in New South Wales to make it to the Cup.

It's their first day at the Cup, and Ms Connor is taking the opportunity to show off the skills of a local hatmaker in Griffith.

"We're really enjoying our day today," Ms Connor said.

Recent retirees Mark and Carmen Dean are down from Newcastle and say they plan to make a weekend of it as they enjoy their first Melbourne Cup.

"We haven't been here before, so we've always watched it on TV, so let's go down," Mr Dean says.

Andrew's prediction: Minsk Moment (6)

James McDonald on board, Chris Waller-trained, good at the distance and in the wet.

Mick's prediction: Minsk Moment (6)

Open race, but I am with Andrew on this one.

That was a dramatic Cup! Knights Order and Smokin' Romans went for it at the 800m mark, and looked to steal a break on the field, but despite carrying 57.5kg, Gold Trip came home stronger than anything.

The favourite Deauville Legend kept on coming, despite questions about it in the wet going, but he couldn't quite get there as the two lightweight chances Emissary and High Emocean held him off.

What an incredible few weeks for Gold Trip. Second in the Caulfield Cup, ninth in the Cox Plate, and now the winner of the Melbourne Cup.

He becomes just the third topweight to win the Cup since 1954 - that is an incredible effort.

Race 8 is dedicated to the former monarch.

It is called the, In Memory Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

It will be run over 1,400m.

Ciaron Maher is speaking now, as Gold Trip goes from fourth in a Prix de L'arc De Triomphe to winning the Melbourne Cup in two years.

A fantastic effort by the whole team. This horse is quite dicey and he's done a fantastic job. And to run in three of the big ones and have him present in the Cup like that was fantastic.

Maher says he and jockey Mark Zahra had worked out the way to attack the race.

We had a plan going out, Mark. He was very good on him in the Caulfield Cup. We just wanted to wait, wait, wait and we know he got that good turn of foot. He was fantastic.

It's unbelievable. It's a dream come true. I'm just thrilled.

His training partner David Eustace is emotional after winning his first Cup.

I can't believe it. Obviously a bit overcome. Yeah, it's obviously a dream that we all want to achieve.

It's the pinnacle for our sport. To do it with Ciaron, I'm so grateful to be training with him.

And it's just a great honour to be doing that with all these good horses and an amazing team of staff that we have. It's a full credit to them to get five here and to, this horse who was so unlucky in the Caulfield Cup and so gutted when he got beat.

And I thought he would get beat again. It's just quite incredible.

Winning jockey Mark Zahra speaks to Channel 10.

I can't [put this into words]. I feel like crying. It's unbelievable. What a day.

He's a horse that when you go, you don't give him a chance to think about it. I was hoping no-one would come near me.

It's just elation when I crossed the line.

Zahra says his Mum used to give him the day off to watch the race when he was a kid. Now he's won it. Great stuff.

Gold Trip, ridden by Mark Zahra, becomes the first Cup winner for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Second was the Geelong Cup winner, Emissary and Bendigo Cup winner, High Emocean, another Maher-Eustace runner rounded out the placings.

After all the preludes, the waiting is over.

All eyes are on Flemington and the 3,200m. For 22 horses and their connections, this is the edge of history.

The skies have cleared enough to avoid a heavy rating, but who will take advantage? Will the Cup go overseas again, to Deauville Legend or Without A Fight? Will one of the international 'converts', like Hoo Ya Mal or Camorra get the job done for Australian trainers? Can one of the local-bred horses like Duais or Montefilia or Realm of Flowers triumph in the big race?

Will we get another Cup for the Cummings, Hayes of Freedman families?

• Overlooked runner who was a star earlier in the year, lost form but came home strongly in the Caulfield Cup. Set for this race, could give Hugh Bowman his first Cup win.
  

Mick's prediction: Montefilia (4)

• Ran home strong in the Caulfield Cup. Going out to 3,200 could be really good. Has won in soft conditions before. 

We are less than 20 minutes out, the anthem has been sung, VRC chair Neil Wilson has held aloft the Melbourne Cup trophy in front of the grandstands.

The horses are getting ready, being walked around the mounting yard with big crowds getting up close.

How will the internationals cope with the big crowd and the noise? We'll find out shortly.

Horses in the Melbourne Cup are numbered in descending order of weight carried, so the topweight carries number one on the saddlecloth, the lightest carries number 24, and so on.
