Australia has stuck with a winning formula in naming its squad for the first Test series of the summer against the West Indies.

The only incumbent to miss out on the 13-man squad was leg-spinner Mitch Swepson, who played four of five Tests across series in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in March and July.

He is also one of three members from Australia's last squad from last summer's Ashes series to miss out on a spot, with back-up bowlers Jhye Richardson and Michael Neser also cut as the squad was slimmed down from 16 to 13 players.

Opener Marcus Harris retains a place in the squad despite a poor run of outs leading him to be dropped for the in-form Usman Khawaja, who made a hugely successful return to end the Ashes.

"After some larger squads for the sub-continent tours over the winter, we have returned to a very similar squad to that which performed strongly last summer in comprehensively winning the Ashes," national selection panel chair George Bailey said.

Harris is averaging 66, with two tons and a pair of half-centuries from his past eight first-class innings across the English county season and Victoria's first three Sheffield Shield games.

The 30-year-old was part of the squad that travelled to Pakistan but was not picked to tour Sri Lanka later in the year.

The Victorian opener averages just over 25 with a high score of 79 from his 14 Tests.
