The ultimate knock down, rebuild at a Cairns beachfront location is on the market – but it comes with a hefty price tag.

The beach shack at 255 O’Shea Esplanade, Machans Beach, is on the street that time forgot, populated with older houses unlike some swanky northern beaches oceanfront strips.

The three bedroom shack built in 1940 has a $1,095,000 price tag.

It is on a 576sq m block and a major selling point is that the block has dual access to Marshall St at the back, and thus no rear neighbours.

It last sold in June 1988 for just $102,000.

Properties on O’Shea Esplanade in the close-knit suburb near Cairns Airport appear to be tightly-held.

The most recent recorded sale was $610,000 for 187 O’Shea Esp, a two bedroom property, in November 2021.

A two storey house at 189 O’Shea Esp sold for $690,000 the same month.

The expansive home at 145 O’Shea Esp sold for $800,000 in July 2021.

Ray White Cairns Beaches agent Paul Stirling said the dwelling was in poor condition and needed a major renovation.

It is on a 576sq m block.

Mr Stirling said new and renovated homes were starting to mushroom along O’Shea Esp and it was the closest beachfront address to Cairns CBD and the airport.

Machans Beach was first surveyed in 1885, but was not permanently settled until the 1920s and it is named after Richard Machan who was among the first permanent white settlers in the area, having purchased land in the 1920s.

It was a locality until 2002, when it was finally gazetted as a suburb.

Cairns Regional Council spent $16.8m rebuilding a crumbling seawall along the suburb’s northern coastline, with the construction of a causeway further out to sea to provide more protection for homes, in 2015.
