The regional news team, which increased by 60 last year following deals with Google and Facebook’s owner Meta, will join the news division. Anderson said the revised structure would enhance journalism in regional areas. Capital city radio and the national radio networks such as RN, ABC Classic and Triple j will sit under the chief content officer. Anderson also flagged plans to increase investment in digital products and services.

“I know that change is often challenging, especially given the last few years,” Anderson said. “But I am asking you to embrace this opportunity to adapt and evolve to make sure we remain trusted, valued and vital as an institution and service for generations to come.”
The move, once complete, will be the biggest structural change to the ABC since 2017, when former managing director Michelle Guthrie reorganised the broadcaster into three teams focused on topics (Anderson was head of entertainment and specialist when the structure was changed).
An ABC source previously said Anderson’s new plans would not result in any redundancies and was considered in light of the vacancies of two division heads: Michael Carrington, who left his position as head of entertainment and specialist this year, and Judith Whelan, who was recently promoted to editorial director from her role as head of regional and local. However, Anderson has now flagged the changes may impact some positions.
