A jockey has been injured and his horse has died after a fall during a race at Moonee Valley racecourse. 

Teo Nugent and racehorse Florescent Star fell on Saturday afternoon during race six at the Abell Stakes.

Nugent appeared to be trampled as he fell, and the mare fell over the racetrack barrier.

The 24-year-old was immediately attended to by medics while veterinarians attended to the horse. 

Within minutes of the fall, Nugent was reportedly "conscious and chatting to medical staff" and was moving his limbs, according to Racing Victoria. He was taken to hospital.

A trackside onlooker told the ABC that Florescent Star "did not get up" following the fall. 

Veterinarians euthanased the horse on the course due to injuries sustained during the race.
