NSW Police are investigating a social media video which appears to show a group of men torturing a kangaroo.
Key points:
- Police are appealing for information after a dead kangaroo was found at Mount Panorama-Wahluu
- The investigation began after a member of the public reported a video on social media
- Detectives have released descriptions of two men who they believe could assist with inquiries
Detectives from the Chifley Police District have appealed for information about the incident, after a member of the public who administers a social media page reported the video to the Bathurst Station on Monday.
Police said they believed a group of men were allegedly involved in the incident at the weekend, at McPhillamy Park at the summit of Mount Panorama-Wahluu.
Kangaroos can often be found in and around the precinct, including during the annual Bathurst 1000 race week.
Chief Inspector Glenn Cogdell, officer in charge at Bathurst Police Station, said officers subsequently went to the park and found a dead kangaroo with "a number of injuries".
"The kangaroo was in some form of decomposition, which made it more difficult to ascertain the extent of all the injuries it sustained," he said.
Police have published images of a man they believe may be able to assist with inquiries.
He is described as being Caucasian, of medium build, and wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.
Officers are also hoping to speak with a second man, described as being of Caucasian appearance, wearing red glasses and black-and-white striped sandals.
Chief Inspector Cogdell urged "any person who may be involved, or who may have seen what occurred" to contact Bathurst Police Station, or Crimestoppers.
"Any animal cruelty offence is confronting, to either police or persons who've identified [it]," he said.
