The Age is seeking talented journalists for a 12-month traineeship program in our Melbourne newsroom. This is a rare opportunity to learn the craft alongside award-winning journalists and editors.

For nearly 170 years, The Age has published quality journalism on local, national and international issues. Through our website and newspapers, we are the dominant masthead in Victoria, covering issues across politics, sport, business and culture. We are in a stronger position than ever, with 4.8 million readers consuming our journalism in print and online each month, making The Age Victoria’s most widely read masthead.

Applications for traineeships close on Monday, April 8. You can apply here.

Age editor Patrick Elligett encouraged aspiring journalists to apply.

The Age’s trainee program is an incubator of excellence. Our past two trainee cohorts have each produced a Victorian young journalist of the year, in addition to recognition at the Walkley and Quill awards,” he said.

“We are looking for candidates with new ideas, tenacity, fearlessness and a commitment to the values of truth and independence that make The Age special.”

The training program will focus on developing reporting and production skills, generating story ideas and identifying news angles, and creating journalism with impact for our vast audience.

The successful candidates will have excellent writing and interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of news and current affairs and a curiosity about people and issues. We are particularly interested in applicants with a passion for data journalism and visual storytelling.

Photographers and photojournalists are also welcome to apply.
