Englishman Kyren Wilson has become the snooker world champion, defeating Welshman Jak Jones in the final.

Wilson, who was a runner-up at the 2020 world championship, secured his maiden crown with an 18-14 win over the two-day final.

The win is Wilson's first win in any of Snooker's Triple Crown major tournaments, which included the UK Open and the Masters.

There were hairy moments for the Englishman, who lost three frames in a row when he was on the verge of victory.

But he was cool in the 32nd and ultimately deciding frame, potting the balls he needed to take an unassailable lead — leading to Jones offering a handshake.

The usually cool Wilson shouted "come on" when he potted the red that gave him a 54-point lead with 51 points remaining on the table in the final frame.

"I'd like to say sorry to Jak for that outburst but it does just mean so much to all of us," he said post-match.

"My mum and dad have remortgaged and sacrificed their whole lives to get me here. My brother and wife too. The list goes on and on, it's a massive team effort."

Wilson entered the final session of the final with a 16-11 lead, needing just two frames to win the title.

A re-spotted black ball was needed in the session's opening frame after both players finished 73 points apiece.
