Netball Australia's (NA) board has elected World Cup-winning captain Liz Ellis as its new chair.

Ellis, who is the most capped player in Diamonds' history, will succeed Wendy Archer, having only been appointed an NA board director last month.

"It is a huge privilege to lead this great sport which has given me so much in my life and which plays such an important role in the lives of millions of girls and young women,'' Ellis said in a NA statement.

"I am looking forward to working closely with our passionate and experienced board and everyone at Netball Australia to ensure that netball continues to inspire the future generation of players and fans.''

Following her retirement in 2007, Ellis has maintained a role in netball as a TV commentator, while she chaired the sport's State of the Game Review in 2020.

She said netball was in a "healthy position" after it announced its second surplus in two years earlier this week.

"We have challenges that we will meet head-on," Ellis said.

"But everyone in the sport from the board to the clubs, to the players and the fans are united and that opens up opportunities to do amazing things together.''

Ellis played for the Diamonds between 1993 and 2007.

She captained the Diamonds for four seasons, highlighted by winning the 2007 World Cup in New Zealand.

Ellis is a member of the NA and Sports Australia Hall of Fames.
