Walking on a rope the width of broom handle, more than a kilometre in the air between two cliffs is like walking on air, particularly when you are naked.

A group of thrillseekers rigged up a high-line near the top of the Stirling Range, a rugged group of mountains that tower over the surrounding lowlands in Western Australia's south.

If the dramatic landscape and dizzying drop below wasn't enough to put them off, one walker, Jack Gooch, decided to strip off.

"By the time we were all set up and were ready to go, perfect conditions, no wind, beautiful sun, a little chilly, I thought, 'You only live once, I’m going to do this,'" he said.

Naked and afraid

He stripped down only wearing harness for safety's sake.

"But I like to think I was still naked because I didn’t have a hat or underwear on," Mr Gooch said.

"And that’s the criteria for being naked, no hat, no underwear, otherwise it would be cheating".

The highliners were Mr Gooch, Rob Burnett, Carmen Schoenjahn and Ed Maddison, accompanied by film maker Jeremy Shepherd who documented the death defying adventure last Friday.

The high rope spanned nearly 50m between the cliffs, with anchor points on boulders the size of hatchbacks.

"We all made a full crossing across the line, and all the way back, without falling," he said.

"And we did it in beautiful conditions, with the absolute best view. It's a beautiful and special spot."

Epic adventure a memory for life

Ms Schoenjahn said it was a thrilling experience.

"I'd like to say that I was just taking in the beauty and the calmness of this special place, but I was definitely focused on my breathing and taming the silly mind tricks to make it across to the other side," she said.

In 2022, the close-knit collective, who dubbed themselves the Perth Midliners set a record for the state's highest slackline walk, crossing a 127-metre gap between cliff faces, 890 metres high in the Stirling Range.

Mr Shepherd said, despite one walker having broken ribs, he travelled more than 2500km to take part.

"I couldn't believe Ed Maddison — the strength and resilience to put a backpack on where your strap is probably pressing in on that rib. I was just shaking my head, like wow," he said.

Mr Shepherd said the beauty of the landscape was awe inspiring..

"You've got 80 plant species on the Stirling Range that can't be found anywhere else or Earth, so it's worth going up there for a hike," he said.
