The Pacific Highway was blocked for several hours overnight after a truck crashed into a shopfront on the NSW mid-north coast.

The truck smashed into the office of a law firm on Grafton Street in Coffs Harbour and jackknifed around 1am.

Police are investigating, but say the 25-year-old male driver, who was not injured in the crash, returned negative results to drug and alcohol tests taken at the scene.

Anthony Foggarty is a solicitor at the firm and said he found out after a friend gave him a call.

"I had a mate who took a photo and said you might have problems getting to work today and it was a photo of the truck crashed into the verandah," Mr Foggarty said.

Mr Foggarty said the future bypass would alleviate safety concerns on the road for businesses.

"This corner is a bit of a surprise where you can park cars on a highway, where trucks come around."

He said it would be a while before workers could access the front door.

Inspector Sally Scott said the truck was travelling southbound before it crashed.

"The truck has jackknifed for unknown reasons and collided with a building," she said.

Coffs Harbour is one of the only major urban centres still not bypassed by the Pacific Highway.

Work on a $2.2 billion bypass began last year.

All northbound lanes of the highway were reopened around 6am while southbound lanes were re-opened around 8am.

Fire and Rescue crews are currently on the scene working around asbestos in the building.

"The building has collapsed somewhat and has minor structural damage where asbestos has fallen from the building," Inspector Scott said.
