An elegant and historic home, which has had just five owners over the past 120-plus years, is on offer in Perth’s ritzy Peppermint Grove for a cool $11 million plus.

The sprawling five-bedroom 28 Irvine Street property, which was built in 1898, is set across a 1819sqm land holding, where the front garden's grand 100-year-old plus liquidambar tree planted by the original builder, takes pride of place.

Selling agent Jim Hall from Mack Hall Real Estate said buyer interest in the residence has been high given its price point.

“There's been a lot of intrigue, let's put it that way,” he said.

“I think that it really is the embodiment of a Peppermint Grove estate. The facade is steeped in tradition of the late 1800s brick front but as you go through the house, all the modern conveniences have been sought out and the stylings are extremely tasteful.

“So it’s slightly understated from the front and evolves into a grand estate as you walk through the home.”

While the vendors have completed interior renovations, such as a modernised kitchen, the home has retained its historical charm, with a soaring glass two-level wraparound void featuring a chandelier crafted by the same artisans who built the replica of Captain James Cook's ship, the Endeavour.

The back garden still features a tuart tree, which is more than a century old.

The home’s long list of features includes four fireplaces, a library, an air-conditioned and humidified wine cellar, a pool, a five-car garage, two studies and a study nook, and guest suite with separate access.

With just five families calling the heritage-listed home their place of residence since its inception, Mr Hall said a 30-year owner average was pretty spectacular.

Its Heritage Council of WA statement of significance cites that the “single storey limestone, iron and timber pavilion cottage, in a transitional Victorian Tudor cum Federation Bungalow style”, has cultural significance because of its historical associations with senior public servants.

This includes Charles Gale and John Moore Dickson, and Olga Dickson who was the initiator of Kindergarten of the Air, the namesake of an ABC radio program for children unable to attend school during World War II.

Olga is said to be the home’s longest resident, having lived there from the age of nine until her late 80s.

“It is an attractive and elegant pavilion design which makes a skilful transition between the Victorian Regency and Federation Bungalow styles; it is rare in style and provenance; it is part of a cultural group and a townscape area,” the statement reads.
