The death of a toddler at a Perth hospital will trigger an urgent clinical review, after the boy's family complained their pleas for help from GPs and hospital staff were ignored.

Sandipan Dhar died at just 21 months old in March after suffering a persistent fever for several weeks following routine vaccinations.

His parents say they had raised concerns with GPs and hospital staff at the Joondalup Health Campus on several occasions, asking for blood tests to be carried out.

He died at the hospital on March 24 and a post-mortem revealed the toddler had leukaemia.

Clinical and coroner review likely

WA Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson, who has been in contact with the Dhar family, said it seemed apparent their concerns for their son's health had gone unheeded.

"It's certainly the case that the family feel they weren't heard," she said.

"It's my view that families should be listened to. Parents know their children best and they do need to be listened to and their concerns taken seriously."

Sandipan's death is now subject to a SAC 1 clinical review, with the WA coroner also likely to investigate.

SAC 1 situations are defined as clinical incidents that have or could have caused serious harm or death attributed to the level of health care provided, rather than the patient’s underlying condition or illness.

Ms Sanderson said the Dhar family had been in contact with the WA attorney-general, and further support was being provided.

WA Liberal leader Libby Mettam said the death of Sandipan Dhar was not acceptable.

"Our heart goes out to the family. It should not have taken media reports for this family to receive the answers that they deserve. It is an absolute tragic set of circumstances," she said.

'Distinct differences' to Aishwarya Aswarth

A family spokesperson had claimed the situation shared similarities with the death of Aishwarya Aswarth almost three years ago.

Aishwarya died at Perth Children's Hospital in April 2021 from a blood infection while waiting for treatment.

Despite describing the latest case as tragic, Amber Jade-Sanderson said the circumstances of Sandipan's case were not the same.

"[Aishwarya] was a largely healthy young girl who contracted an infection which led to sepsis," Ms Sanderson said.

"Sandipan's interaction with the hospital with Joondalup Health Campus was two days prior to him passing away.

"He would have had that condition for some time. So I think there's quite distinct differences here."
