A Woodside country estate, which made national headlines after owner Angus Campbell filmed the Cudlee Creek bushfires rolling over his home, has been listed for sale after undergoing a wow-factor transformation.

The 21.5ha estate has been listed for sale with $4m plus price guide which could see the expansive estate set a new residential record for the prominent Hills town.

It comes only four years after an “army of fire” tore through the property at 337 Bird In Hand Rd, sparing only the house.

The property has now risen from the ashes as a luxurious country estate, featuring a resort-style heated pool and spa, new shedding and rainwater tank, a newly constructed horse arena and stables, as well as enhanced security and fencing.

Improvements have also been made to the five-bedroom home, with an updated kitchen now featuring a butler’s pantry, a new sunken Franke sink, gas top and marble benchtops.

New blinds, including elegant plantation shutters, have been added to the windows, while the second bathroom has been refreshed with new grout, cupboards and updated vanity area storage.

Mr Campbell said he originally bought the land in 2005 with the vision to create a grand entertainer.

“The vision was simple – harness the environment, capture the views, embrace a semi-formal style and maintain the privacy, but above all, everything we planted or built had to incorporate a strong sense of space,” he said.
“Before covid we put the homestead to work as an Airbnb for a few years to supplement our income while we started our local businesses and we also hosted small weddings of 50 people charging $5000 for a three-night stay.

“It was very lucrative and we even had a few famous faces marry and stay here along the way. “Besides the easy Airbnb money, if you wanted to implement some farming income the world is your oyster.”

Mr Campbell said the home’s location was second to none.

“It’s just far enough to be away from it all, yet close enough to be convenient,” he says.

“We have always felt the stresses of the city leave as soon as we hit the South Eastern Freeway.”

The property is being marketed through Harcourts Adelaide Hills – Stirling/Mt Barker.

‘I dodged a bullet’

In an interview with The Advertiser in December 2019, Mr Campbell reflected on sheltering inside his Woodside house where he captured the terrifying moment flames came within metres of his front door.

Mr Campbell said he “dodged a bullet” after fire, fanned by strong winds, raced across the paddock of his Bird in Hand Rd property towards his house about 4pm.

In a video posted to his social media account, the once prominent real estate agent can be heard saying “oh hell, oh God, go away, go away” as he watched the flames burn his landscaped garden.

At one point howling wind sends embers crashing towards the camera, which Mr Campbell placed against a window.

Speaking to The Advertiser, Mr Campbell said everything but his house on the 60-acre property was “up in smoke”.

“There were spot fires everywhere,” he said, about an hour after posting his video.

“I’ve never been so scared.

“Once the flames were within half a kilometre away, I thought ‘shit, here it comes’ and once it jumped into the paddock and the dry grass it just raced up and absolutely decimated it.

“The house is okay, it went around the house, came up to within 15m.”

The fires decimated the entire 21.5ha estate but thankfully spared the house.

Mr Campbell prepared his house for an approaching fire by putting three sprinklers on his roof, flooding gutters and watering his lawn.

It was likely the kikuyu lawn that surrounds his house, paired with fire resistant agapanthus, helped prevent the fire spreading to the property.

“Agapanthus are one of the best plants you can have on the boundary of your property, they absorb so much heat,” he said.

“If you took a photo (of the house) from the top it would be an oasis of green in a moonscape.

“I know there are a few out there who have lost properties and I’m devastated for them, it’s a Black Christmas.”
