36 Reigate Rd, Highton, is on the market for $2.6m to $2.8m.

A love affair with the history of a 1920s Highton bungalow spurred a meticulous renovation that’s elevated the former farmhouse into a luxurious family home.

Hefty sandstone walls, originally part of the Montpellier Hotel, 100-year-old timbers and artfully exposed old Geelong bricks are among original fabrics celebrated at 36 Reigate Rd.

The four-bedroom home blends heritage and contemporary style, with a sympathetic rear extension added in 2019 the final piece in the transformation.

The vendors, who own LK Interiors, drew on their decades of experience for the restoration project at their home of 18 years.

“It is very much a romantic home and it is a love story for us,” she said.

“We have loved every part of this journey, restoring this 1920s home.”

They set out to create a high-end residential finish, from the solid oak and burnished concrete floors, to granite benchtops, custom hand blown glass lighting, solid brass hardware and an impressive collection of textiles.

The 1920s bungalow was built with sandstone reclaimed from the Montpellier Hotel after it was damaged by a tornado in 1926, according to heritage records.

Timber-lined cathedral ceilings feature in the main living zone.

The new north-facing rear pavilion is designed around a showstopping landscaped outdoor entertainment area with a mineral pool and open fireplace and is home to an open-plan living zone and lavish main bedroom suite.

The original front section of the house, meanwhile, has been reconfigured to create three further bedrooms, two bathrooms, a second lounge and a multifunctional study space with a clever built-in seating nook.

“It was important to us that we had that classic but keeping it cool high-end residential. The form and function was very important for the whole thing but the detail is important to me as a designer,” the vendor said.

A large butler’s pantry hides a suite of extra appliances.

The main bedroom has features an Amalfi handcrafted textile wall covering woven from raw silk and carefully laminated.

Original features shine in the front lounge.

“It was important to have the interior spaces blending from the traditional to the modern with the aesthetics, we didn’t want any jarring.”

Cathedral ceilings are a standout feature of the kitchen, dining and living area where the long list of extras includes a butler’s pantry, Wolf oven, two dishwashers, Vintec wine fridge and a Zip tap for sparkling water on demand.

The vendor said she had lavished just as much attention on the 1108sq m property’s garden to carve out pockets for all seasons.

Grape vines provide summer shade by the fireplace.

The old kitchen is now a flexible study space.

“We have got the north back yard with the pool and it’s got that beautiful entertaining area with the vines – it is quite cool,” she said.

“And then you have got the west side where you are looking at the sandstone of the home, how it is made, and it’s a beautiful courtyard, and then you have got the front where you can sit in summer or winter with a nice red and admire the view.”

Oslo, Geelong agent Curtis Hoare has listed 36 Reigate Rd, Highton, with $2.6m to $2.8m price hopes.
