This character-filled home comes with a geodesic dome that was the meeting place for the free-minded hippies of Byron back in the ‘70s.

Positioned on top of a hill overlooking the Upper Main Arm hinterland is 1268 Main Arm Road which is listed between $1,550,000 to $1,695,000. The multi-dwelling property comes with a quirky history which is drawing interest from across the region.

The main house consists of three bedrooms and one bathroom and was built in the 1920s before being relocated to the site in the 1960s.

The interiors are cosy with native timber throughout that was sourced and milled on the property, vintage glass pantry doors, along with cedar church wall panels and a cast iron fireplace with floral tiling.

Spread over three levels, the primary property was built in the early 1920's and relocated to its current position in the 1960's. Picture: realestate.com.au

The home is powered with 8kw solar system and supplied with water from a 60,000 litre tank to make it environmentally friendly.

A separate geodesic dome that was built in the 1970s is located on the peak of the property and was the local hangout for free spirits during Byron’s hippie movement.

It gained attention after featuring in a documentary series called 'Mullumbimby Madness: The Legacy of the Hippies’ by Sharon Shostak which explored the culture of the Mullumbimby region between the 70s and 80s.

Since it’s heyday, it has been restored as a stand-alone dwelling which could make for a popular short-term rental. Polished concrete floors and industrial light fittings bring it up to date, however its original groovy edge is still intact with its dystopian dome shaped architecture and sunken lounge.

“We posted the house on social media recently and we had a few old locals reply reminiscing about times spent in the dome,” said selling agent Gary Brazenor of Byron Shire Real Estate.

There’s also a covered bus on the property which could function as guest accommodation or rented for communal living.

Mr Brazenor said that multi-dwelling properties like this one are popular in the Northern Rivers.

“Inflation is hitting everyone, so if you're able to rent a space or have multi-generational living it can reduce costs.”

The large 20acre property hosts a variety of edible vegetation allowing residents to truly live off the land. There are established vegetable beds along with a fruit forest which includes dragon fruit, plums, bananas, mangoes, pomegranates, starfruit, kiwi, and citrus.

Upper Main Arm is a popular hinterland suburb with a quaint general store, Main Arm Upper Primary School, and The Kohinur Hall which hosts local events.

“It’s close to everything, but still removed, it’s truly magical up there,” said Mr Brazenor.

Mullumbimby is also a 15-minute drive away where the hippie culture is still alive and kicking.

“That alternativeness is still there [in Mullumbimby] and it’s a real melting pot of people… you can be sitting next to someone who could be a millionaire, but also next to someone who could have nothing – it’s special like that,” said Mr Brazenor.
