95 Crown Street, Darlinghurst, NSW 2010

A swing … for swinging.

A curious home which has just changed hands in Sydney’s inner east, has revealed a forgotten part of the city’s very colourful history.

The home on Crown St in Darlinghurst on the edge of the Sydney CBD was sold for $2.508m last week via Mark Matthews and Fraser Clarkson from LJ Hooker Double Bay Group.

The four bedroom terrace dates back to the time when trendy Darlo was better known as a red-light district, catering to the darker side of life.

This just sold Darlinghurst home appears to be part of Sydney’s colourful history.

According to the locals, the home was once a ‘swingers club’ and photos from the listing, including two with a swing in one of the bedrooms appears to show what could have gone down in the establishment once upon a time.

According to the State Library of NSW: “Another trade long associated with the Darlinghurst area is the sex industry.

“From the construction of the Victoria Barracks in nearby Paddington in the 1840s and the development of the wharves around Woolloomooloo Bay in the 1860s, brothels and sex workers were attracted to the neighbourhood.

This room isn’t so interesting.

“While it was always a dangerous industry for those involved, from the early twentieth century a growing criminal element was evident as new laws made it harder for street workers to approach potential clients.

“By the 1920s, large-scale brothel owners were dominant in Darlinghurst, the most famous madam being Tilly Devine. At the height of her career in the 1930s, Tilly operated approximately 30 bordellos in the Darlinghurst area.

“Darlinghurst has remained part of the traditional red light district of Sydney, although the area is not as audacious and gaudy as its neighbour Kings Cross.”
