Esperance police are investigating a brawl that followed a local football match, leaving one man in hospital with a concussion and lacerations to his head and face.

The incident took place around 4.30pm Saturday in the car park at Ports Football Club, following the men's match between Ports and Esperance Bulldogs.

Police say an on-field verbal exchange between members of opposing clubs was the catalyst for the altercation.

"One of the involved players was walking to his car at the rear of the football club when approached by the same player and others from the opposing team," a police spokesperson said.

"A further verbal altercation occurred and quickly escalated into a physical confrontation."

Police say a man in his 30s attempted to defuse the situation, but was "set upon by multiple people".

He was later treated in hospital for concussion and lacerations to his head and face.

Further members from both clubs become involved, with police attending shortly after.

Sources have confirmed that Ports club leaders asked Esperance Bulldogs players to leave the venue following the incident.

A Ports spokesperson said the club welcomed the police involvement, but declined to comment further.

The matter has been referred to the WA Football Commission (WAFC).

WAFC executive manager of country football, Brent Hedley, said the incident was disappointing.

"The integrity and the safety of the sport is paramount," he said.

"We've got a zero tolerance to negative behaviour, and especially where that concerns game day environments.

"We're working really closely with the clubs involved in the league to work out what that looks like going forward."

Esperance detectives have urged anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
