Jamaica's Beverley McDonald came third in the women's 200-metre sprint in Sydney.

But it was only today, 24 years later, that she finally got the medal around her neck and the adulation of the crowd.

McDonald was one of ten athletes to receive reallocated Olympic medals at a ceremony at champions park underneath the Eiffel tower.

McDonald finished the race fourth, but the American athlete who came third, Marion Jones, later admitted to using prohibited substances before, during and after the Sydney games.

The reallocation happened in 2009, and in the 15 years since then the medal McDonald was meant to receive got lost!

"After the Marion Jones disqualification, they sent my medal to Jamaica. Jamaica misplaced the medal. That was maybe 12 years ago. But as I said, I'm so happy. I deserved this medal," she said today.

"I gave up a long time ago, but then my husband, Raymond Stewart, he's the one who kept going, asking where is my medal. (He) was like, 'She needs to get her medal.'

"And I just want to say thanks to the IOC for recognising and giving me this medal."
