Cosima Marriner has been appointed editor of The Australian Financial Review as part of a continuing overhaul of the newspaper’s editorial leadership.

The new editor-in-chief of The Australian Financial Review, James Chessell, made the move to appoint Marriner on his first day in the job.

Marriner replaces Fiona Buffini, who had held the position for about 18 months and has worked with the company for 25 years.

Marriner was the Financial Review’s managing editor and before that had worked at The Sydney Morning Herald in several senior editorial roles, including deputy editor.

“I’m honoured to have the opportunity to edit Australia’s best masthead and to lead the nation’s most talented newsroom,” Marriner said. “I look forward to building on the incredible legacy and hard work of Stutch [former editor-in-chief Michael Stutchbury] and Fiona, working closely with James to make the Financial Review an even greater success.”

Chessell said she was perfectly qualified for the role.

In a note to staff on Monday afternoon, Chessell said Buffini would stay on to lead the masthead’s digital transition, before taking on a significant new role in the new year.

“She [Buffini] has led the newsroom with professionalism, calmness and expertise. I know we all look forward to seeing what she does next,” Chessell said.
