The Hawks get the chance to seal a spot in September when they take on North Melbourne in a rescheduled AFL game in Launceston.

Later, Geelong will aim to wrap up the top four when they host West Coast before Richmond ends its season against Gold Coast at the MCG.

Then tonight, the September implications continue as Brisbane tries to secure a home final with a win against Essendon at the Gabba, and the ladder-leading Swans take on Adelaide at the SCG.

AFL Saturday

Ollie Henry has Geelong's third

Kyle Pollard profile image

Great ball movement again from the Cats, and this time Ollie Henry gets on the end of a spilled pill.

He does his best to make it hard though, almost getting it touched with a low kick that shouldn't have been as low as it was.

Oscar Allen is off the field for the Eagles with a leg injury.

Cameron has the first two for Geelong

Kyle Pollard profile image

Great run again from Ollie Dempsey and Max Holmes who have started this one hot.

Holmes breaks it open and kicks long into the F50 and Cameron runs onto it. Inexperience from the Eagles defender sees him defend the right foot instead of the left foot, and Cameron eats it up.

HT: Hawks 12.9 (81) lead Kangaroos 4.2 (26)

It's a hammering in Launceston, and the Hawks are going to play finals. Write it down in pen.

Massimo D'Ambrosio is arguably the best on the field with 16 disposals and a goal, but there are winners all over the field for the Hawks.

Karl Amon, Nick Watson, James Sicily, Jai Newcombe, Jack Ginnivan - all exceptional.

Not sure anyone would want to play the Hawks in September.

The Cats are on the board at Kardinia Park

Kyle Pollard profile image

Rhys Stanley takes a strong clunk in the F50 from a long Max Holmes roost, and then finds Jeremy Cameron in the pocket on his preferred left.

Jezza snaps around the corner from the angle about 35m and kicks truly! He sits fifth in the Coleman Medal.

Permutations for Cats v Eagles

Kyle Pollard profile image

We're into MULTI-GAME areas now.

It's a complete hammering in Launceston, so let's talk the Cats and Eagles for a second.

If the Cats win, they lock up a top four spot and could go as high as second if they win by a lot, and the Giants lose to the Bulldogs by around four goals, while the Power get smashed by around 10 goals to the Dockers. The most likely scenario is a QF against the Swans in Sydney, but the Power in Adelaide is a chance too.

If the Cats lose, they could drop as low as eighth if the Hawks, Lions, Bulldogs and Blues all win.

The Eagles don't move from 16th no matter what happens.

Does percentage matter to Hawthorn?

Kyle Pollard profile image

Gunston has another one for the Hawks after a bad decision by Luke Davies-Uniacke.

It looks like this is going to be major percentage boost to the Hawks - but does it matter?

A little bit, but not much.

A big win does create a buffer from Carlton, should the Blues beat the Saints, but the Hawks are not going to catch the superior Bulldogs percentage, which will only matter if the Dogs beat the Giants anyway.

D'Ambrosio has one now!

Kyle Pollard profile image

This is a bit of a training drill for the Hawks now.

Massimo reads the ball better than anyone as it comes inside the F50, collects, steps around the defender, and kicks truly.

Nick Watson gets his second

Kyle Pollard profile image

A bit of a hold on Nick Watson in the marking contest and he gets the free shot at goal - and drills it.

The Hawks lead by 41 points.

And the Hawks answer straight back

Kyle Pollard profile image

Hawthorn Globetrotter stuff there, and it started on the wing with lovely work from Josh Weddle, who manages to tap the ball along the boundary and keep the ball in the play.

Once in the F50, Nick Watson looks to cop one high but it isn't called. He handballs to Connor Macdonald who snaps truly, then celebrates with one hand over his eye.

I have no idea what that means.

North finally gets one back

Kyle Pollard profile image

The Kangaroos deserved one there with repeat entries, and Jy Simpkin gets on the end of a Will Phillips handball to snap truly from about 30m.

And Ginnivan gets his second!

Kyle Pollard profile image

It's that left boot from Amon again that sets it up. I've said it before and I'll say it again, left footers are the best kicks in the game.

Ginnivan gets on the end of this one about 35m and converts truly. We're out to 34 points.

Sicily boots a beauty from outside 50!

Kyle Pollard profile image

A great start for the Hawks here, as Sicily takes a mark right on the 50m arc after a hurried kick out of defence from Liam Shiels.

Sicily reckons he has the leg, and he absolutely does!

A huge roost from the skipper and this is getting out of hand for the Kangaroos!

Jackson Archer has been subbed out

Kyle Pollard profile image

Blake Drury is into game for Archer. It looks like a soft tissue injury.

QT: Hawks 4.4 (28) lead Kangaroos 1.1 (7)

Kyle Pollard profile image

Despite the misty conditions in Launceston, the Hawks are controlling this one comfortably.

I'd argue it's a myth that slippery footy brings teams closer together. The wet ball means the better players with the better skills shine brighter, and we saw that from Hawthorn that quarter.

Karl Amon only has four touches but has used the pill well every time he gets it, while Massimo D'Ambrosio has the most disposals for the Hawks with eight.

North has looked good in spots, but getting it into the F50 arc has been difficult, trailing the Hawks 15-10 in that stat.

Just a reminder, if the Hawks win this one, they're playing finals for the first time since 2018.

Calsher Dear kicks Hawthorn's fourth!

Kyle Pollard profile image

That's Dear's 20th sausage roll for the season and the Hawks are looking ominous here.

This is Dear's 15th game, and so far he's only played in two losses, against the Power in R11 and the Giants in R22.

The son of 1991 Norm Smith medallist Paul Dear is proving to be an important cog in this machine.

Jackson Archer has gone down to the rooms

Kyle Pollard profile image

Jackson Archer is limping through the rooms and sub Blake Drury is warming up for the Kangaroos.

No news yet on what the injury is.

Cats and Eagles subs named

Kyle Pollard profile image

This was meant to be the early game and I was only meant to be starting work about now. But here I am.

Cats sub is Jed Bews, Eagles sub is Ryan Maric.

Jy Simpkin in potential trouble

Kyle Pollard profile image

It won't matter until next season, but Jy Simpkin has barreled into Massimo D'Ambrosio as the Hawk mid tried to pick up the ball.

It'll likely be dependent on if there's any concussion, but on replay it didn't look great.

And Watson roves a beauty!

Kyle Pollard profile image

A big roost into the F50 from Sam Frost lands at another Chol contest, and the big forward deftly touches it down to The Wizard in front of him, who roves it perfectly and snaps the goal!

It's exciting footy from Hawthorn.
