A woman accused of stabbing her two children to death in the Blue Mountains has faced court after being charged with murder.

Patricia Smith faced Parramatta Local Court this morning, after being charged last night with two counts of domestic violence-related murder.

The bodies of Russell and Ben Smith, aged nine and 11, were found in their Faulconbridge home by their father on Tuesday.

Ms Smith did not apply for bail this morning and will remain in custody until her next court appearance in November.

Ms Smith only addressed the court briefly to confirm she understood what was happening and to thank the magistrate.

Paul McGirr, the lawyer representing Patricia Smith, said his client's family was devastated and called for the public to respect their privacy.

Speaking outside court, Ms Smith's lawyer, Paul McGirr said her family was devastated.

"There's a lot of family members who are really hurting in respect to this. Parents, grandparents and the like," he said.

"We'd ask that everyone respect that privacy because … from emergency services that had to attend to the scene and everything else, there'd be a lot of people out there who have been subjected to this."

Police will allege that the bodies of the two boys were found inside their home by the boys' father.

Ms Smith was also found inside the home with alleged self-inflicted stab wounds.

She was taken to Westmead Hospital under police guard.

On Thursday, the boys' father spoke for the first time since the incident describing his sons as "happy, funny, outgoing boys" and very-much loved.

"Like other boys their age, they loved sports, soccer, the Penrith Panthers, fishing, books, music, spending time with their friends and Max their pup," he said in statement issued by NSW Police.
