When Matt and Hanna Cunliffe built their Cannon Hill house, it was a labour of love that was meant to be their forever home.

It’s why they looked over every detail of the home, creating just one of Queensland’s best homes this week.

42 Imperial Ave, Cannon Hill

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom property finished its build in 2020, and was constructed for style: from the resort-style pool to the putting green, to shimmering black of the Japanese Shou Sugi ceiling.

“It’s a method that the Japanese used to treat the treat the timber itself,” Mr Cunliffe said. “There are a lot of nuances within the within the timber itself, but it’s very warm at the same time.”

It’s right next to a pendant made from cow hides, based on a woman’s refuge in Africa that inspired the design.

Built for accessibility and versatility, the home can be both analog or automated, for those who want to control the house on their app.

This was the first home project the Cunliffes worked on together, with them overseeing each touch to the custom build.

The textured interior hides more amenities than you can see, such as modern kitchen amenities, a security system and an in-built area for pets to roam.

“As much as we built the house for ourselves, everything has been done with the second question of, ‘What would other people use it for?’” Mr Cunliffe said.

“It’s an easy home to be wowed by every time you walk into it, but one that doesn’t take a huge amount of effort to make it liveable.”

The home will be auctioned off by Patrick McKinnon and Drew Davies of Place Ascot on Saturday, October 5.

10 Orient Ct, Buderim

Yes, that’s a shipping container for a pool at the front of 10 Orient Ct, Buderim.

Not much of the original home remains before it was heavily renovated by Natalie Clark-Faid and her husband, Stu Faid. What was once a quaint Queenslander is now a contemporary four-bedroom, three-bathroom home, that tells a story of the many travels the couple have been on throughout their lives.

“We’ve travelled pretty extensively as a couple and as a family before settling down in Australia,” Mr Faid said. “And just as a weird coincidence, it was always a China shipping container that turned up on the truck our lives would get packed up in.”

“The house unashamedly embraces where it’s come from, the fact that it was an old property and it’s been significantly enhanced and evolved.”

Were the pool built using traditional methods, it would lose much of the nature the family had come to love about the house.

But it’s also a practical measure. Shipping containers can be used to elevate pools at high levels without building large concrete supports, that would disrupt the lush garden space below.

“I [wanted] to be able to stand here in the kitchen and see the kids playing the pool,” Mr Faid said.

With its garden and garage on the bottom level, the rest of the home sits floating up the hill: its open floor plan and modern features sprinkled with flourishes from around the world.

Zoe Byrne and Gregory Ward of Ray White Buderim are auctioning the home off on Sunday, September 22.

56 Mountjoy Tce, Wynnum

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home at 56 Mountjoy Tce, Wynnum, is an ornate Queenslander that has not been sold in more than two decades.

Surrounded by carefully trimmed plants and generous lawn space, the home takes pride in its space. There’s enough room for an entire gathering around both the front and back, with extra space for a fountain, pavilion and magnesium pool.

The home has been kept in pristine condition, giving an older feel without showing age.

A veranda wraps around the outside of the house, which leads into a classical interior with modern amenities. Furnished timber floors, traditional brick fireplace and patterned carpets are just some of the ways the up-to-date home keeps a nostalgic style.

Offers over $3.3 million are being taken by Jan Goetze and Tyson Clarke of Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty Brisbane.
