A sprawling Newtown property complete with a saltwater swimming pool, floodlit tennis court and a dedicated golfing area didn’t last long on the market once a local family showed interest.
The 3420sq m property at 17 Balcombe Rd, was snapped up in a circa $4.4m-plus deal last week.
The home spent four weeks on the market, highlighting the healthy interest at the top end for exclusive properties, McGrath, Geelong agent Carl Hammond said.

The scale of the property inside and out sparked strong interest from potential buyers, with the eventual purchasers acting quickly once they had set their eyes on the residence later in the campaign.
Mr Hammond said the impressive package with the ultimate kids’ back yard had a sense of space not often found in urban Geelong.
“They just wanted the space, which is hard to find that close to town,” he said.
“It’s like you’re in the country when you’re in the back yard or out on the tennis court, but you’ve a five-minute drive from Pakington St.”
The current owners, who built the four-bedroom, house, have owned it for decades and are only moving on as the time as come to downsize.
Mr Hammond said the size of the property was ideal for the growing family, along with proximity to local schools and the amenities in the area.
The Malishev Homes construction has high square-set ceilings, polished timber floors and custom cabinetry.
An open-plan kitchen, dining and living area is at the heart of the house and extends out through bi-fold doors to a covered patio overlooking the swimming pool.
A large stone island bench is a natural gathering place in the kitchen that includes a butler’s pantry, three Miele ovens and an induction cooktop.
The separate formal lounge and dining area with a gas fire is the picture of elegance, while the rumpus or games room forms part of a rear children’s bedroom wing with direct access to the immaculately kept tennis court.
The property has an oversized triple garage with two electric car chargers, a 12kW solar system, a Telsa battery, hydronic heating, evaporative cooling and remote control blinds to the living areas.
The house is one of nine residences on large blocks on the south side of Balcombe Rd near the Barwon River and King Lloyd Reserve.
“I think the top end of the market is strong for properties that people can’t replace easily,” he said.
“If it’s got some exclusivity about it, people realise that it’s something they can’t replace.”
The transaction follows the sale of a landmark property in exclusive Virginia St for $5.95m after just 17 days on the market.
That property offered a 2697sq m block on the Newtown hill with a historic Californian bungalow built for Lewis Hirst, the son of woollen manufacturer Godfrey in 1919.
The new owners plan to splash even more cash on renovating the two-storey bungalow.
