The All Blacks have retained the Bledisloe Cup for another year after surviving a late Wallabies' comeback to win 31-28 at Sydney's Stadium Australia.
Trailing 31-14 with 15 minutes left in the match, the Wallabies showed fight to claw their way back into the contest via a converted try to inside centre Hunter Paisami.
They edged closer on the scoreboard when Tom Wright crossed the stripe in the 79th minute, with Noah Lolesio's conversion making it a three-point game in the shadows of full-time.
But the All Blacks — who at one stage were reduced to 13 players late in the match due to two yellow cards — held on to make sure they kept the Bledisloe Cup, which has been in their possession since 2003.
The Wallabies — who were coming off a record 67-27 loss to the Pumas — will rue missed opportunities as they failed to capitalise when they were in a solid attacking position on several occasions.
They also left themselves too much work to do after the All Blacks leapt out to a 21-0 lead in the 16th minute of the match.
Three tries to Will Jordan, Rieko Ioane and Caleb Clarke — all converted by Damian McKenzie — put the All Blacks in a commanding position, meaning the Wallabies were on the back foot early in the piece.
First-half tries to Fraser McReight and Matt Faessler gave the Wallabies some hope, but they bookended a fourth All Blacks' five-pointer scored by Ardie Savea that helped the visitors establish a 28-14 lead at the break.
The defeat is the Wallabies' fourth of a disappointing Rugby Championship campaign, while the All Blacks arrested a two-match losing run in the tournament.
The two teams will meet again in Wellington next Saturday night.

Straight off the bat, the All Blacks deserve their win.

There has been much concern about the All Blacks' finishes in the Rugby Championship, so Scott Robertson has some work to do on that front.
For the Wallabies, they wasted too many chances with their entries inside the All Blacks' half.
Turnovers proved costly, as did penalties when they were in strong attacking positions.
In regard to penalties across the 80 minutes, they gave away 11 to the All Blacks' nine, although they avoided the dreaded yellow card while their opponents were shown two.
To the Wallabies' credit, they saw more ball in the second half to limit the All Blacks to 53 per cent of possession for the match.

They opted for the kick to the touch to employ the driving maul from the line-out, but the Wallabies lose the ball at the set-piece and the All Blacks clear from deep inside their own half.
Another chance goes begging …

That was almost the try of the match!
