Nobody likes a dobber, but that doesn’t stop Grant singing like a canary tonight, siccing foreman Dan onto everyone else to deflect from his own rule-breaking.

Grant is still moaning about getting in trouble for over-ordering his plaster this week, claiming everyone else over-ordered too, but when Dan does an audit he discovers nobody else had over-ordered to the extent Grant had.

While Kristian and Mimi had an extra 15 sheets of Gyprock, Ricky and Haydn only had five extra and argued convincingly that that amount of overage was just to cover breakages and errors. Kylie and Brad also had excess plaster but pointed out that was because they had intended to use it in their kitchen and dining area, but had been told by site managers they couldn’t because that would interrupt the work of the kitchen installers.

And Charlotte and Maddy have extra plaster too, but that was ordered by previous contestants Jesse and Paige.

It seems everyone is more or less in the clear, except for Grant and his whopping 42 extra sheets.

“I’m still adamant on everyone getting a time penalty,” he says, before snitching on Ricky and Haydn for missing that day’s compulsory pre-work briefing.

Ricky is unimpressed.

“If you get done for something and get in trouble there’s obviously two ways you can go about it,” he says. “You can just cop it, or you can scramble and start taking down everyone around you. If you do do that, it probably just shows the type of person you are.”

The teams will have to wait until next week to find out what time penalties Dan will deliver, it seems likely his decision is also going to deliver a ‘Grantrum’.

In other news, the teams all delivered pretty great kitchens this week, though Ricky and Haydn are deflated by the judge’s criticism of what Marty Fox calls “the biggest faux pas you can do when designing a kitchen”.

Ricky and Haydn committed an apparently fatal faux pas with their kitchen design.

Their curved timber island bench with enough seating for up to 10 people, brass strip running down the centre of their island slab and three big pendants get the tick of approval, but the placement of the ovens and fridge in a thoroughfare let them down. And Shaynna also pointed out the fact they have one measly kitchen sink for a house that can accommodate so many people is another flaw.

She sticks the stiletto heel in with one final parting shot at the boys’ styling, saying the flowers they’ve picked “look like they took them out of the bin”.

Why The Block 2024 houses will sell for massive losses

Charlotte and Maddy’s natural stone benchtop, Shaker-profile oak cabinet doors, appliance cupboard with pocket slider doors and fluted glass detailing wins raves from the judges. Darren Palmer is happy there’s no butler’s pantry, noting that too many kitchen designers try and force one in, to the detriment of the rest of the kitchen.

Maddy and Charlotte inherited Jesse and Paige's kitchen to much success.

The girls are the first to admit the kitchen isn’t their design and give credit to Jesse and Paige for their choices.

Their only real input to the room is the decision to swap out a tap and the styling, which Shaynna declares “spot on”.

The judges’ only small quibble is the placement of the sink right in front of the ovens, which Shaynna points out is exactly where you need the most benchspace, but it’s not enough to stop Darren Palmer awarding them a perfect 10.

Courtney and Grant’s showstopping brown porcelain benchtop, wine fridge and gold tapware wins plaudits, as does their styling, but interior designer Shaynna is incredulous when real estate agent Marty decides he’s not a fan.

Courtney and Grant's kitchen only had room for three stools.

Courtney and Grant’s kitchen didn’t impress Marty Fox.

“I don’t feel that this kitchen matches the quality and sophistication of the other rooms. They aren’t blowing anyone away, particularly myself,” he says, obviously deciding that Shaynna isn’t “anyone”. “They’ve missed the mark. I’ve seen this time and time again.”

“I think you’re looking at a completely different kitchen to me,” Darren says.

Kylie and Brad on the other hand, have finally nailed their moody dark palate.

Their black island bench, showstopping spinning end cabinets, matte black anti-fingerprint and handle-less cabinets won raves; the lack of storage and appliance cupboard and single sink didn’t.

Mimi and Kristian’s olive-green oven and rangehood got Darren and Shaynna’s tick of approval, but Marty — fast becoming the Bernard King of renovation show judges — considered it divisive and likely to reduce their potential market and declared himself underwhelmed.

“I think the majority of buyers will feel let down,” he says.

They all agreed the glass splashback overlooking the future pool and the sensibly proportioned and placed butler’s pantry were wins though, along with the chevron pattern wooden floor.

Scores are close again, and motivated by spite Kylie finally agrees to use her and Brad’s bonus point to ensure the new contestants Maddy and Charlotte don’t get a win for a kitchen they inherited from Jesse and Paige.

It’s enough to get her the win, with half a point.

“I was not going to let the girls have it over us. They got a 10 and it wasn’t even their house. I’m salty about that so yes, I will take the win over them, thank you,” the ever gracious Kylie says.

Kylie goes full mean girl as she watches the sisters during judging.

Kylie somehow manages to win a room and still have a cat’s bum mouth.

JUDGES’ SCORES

Kylie and Brad 29.5 (including bonus point)

Maddy and Charlotte 29

Courtney and Grant 27

Kristian and Mimi 26.5

Ricky and Haydn 23
