53 Hyne St, Lilydale has smashed the suburb’s residential price record.

A Lilydale resort-style compound inspired by the television show Thunderbirds cliff-face headquarters has smashed the suburb’s price record by nearly $2m.

The six-bedroom house at 53 Hyne St was snapped up on September 19 for $5.3m — under its $5.9m-$6.4m price guide.

Lilydale’s residential benchmark was originally held by the neighbouring five-bedroom house at 49 Hyne St which sold for $3.42m in May last year.

Seller Michael Taylor told the Herald Sun earlier that the home’s design was inspired by the British puppet television series ‘Thunderbirds’, specifically the secret headquarters built into a cliff face on Tracy Island, brought to life by Marcus Roberts Architects.

“In our atrium between our ensuite and bedroom, we actually have a sculpture of a rocket going up through the roof and it was designed on the Thunderbird,” Mr Taylor said.

Motivated by his kids’ passions, the retired builder also incorporated a recording studio in the property’s design for his son’s punk rock band ‘Bloody Ripper’ as well as a skate ramp for his other son who was a BMX trick rider.

He added that his favourite part of the Lilydale digs was the dam on the land which was home to about a dozen trout.

“Sometimes we take a fishing rod down there and catch a trout and let it go,” he said.

Abi Taylor, Michael Taylor’s wife and co-seller, told the Herald Sun earlier that the home made her feel like she was on holiday everyday, as every window she looked out of was like a picture frame.

Spanning more than two hectares, the property features an infinity pool and spa, tennis court, a gym, 12-car garage, fenced paddock and a vegetable garden with 20 irrigated raised beds.

Jellis Craig Mooroolbark and Lilydale partner Matthew Lockyer said the sale was a testament to the Yarra Valley area which was attracting a lot of investment at the moment.

“A house of that calibre can attract buyers to pay that sort of money in the area; these homes you’ve got to have patience because they’re so unique,” Mr Lockyer said.

He said a Berwick family secured the property after going head to head with another vying family.

While it was listed, Mr Lockyer said the residence attracted interest from local, interstate and international prospective buyers from countries like Saudi Arabia and England who were looking to relocate.

CoreLogic records show the property was purchased by the pair in May 2004 for $465,000 and underwent renovations in 2011 and 2014.
