WHEN a significant historical Tasmanian property such as this one is available, buyers from all over sit up and take notice.

Oatlands’ property the Manse launched a few days ago, and already people from NSW, Queensland and Tasmania, too, have been lighting up the agent’s phone.

Heritage property specialist Dominic Romeo said inquiries were coming in before the property was officially for sale.

“My followers react strongly when I list important, landmark, historic properties, particularly sandstone buildings with the Georgian vernacular. The Manse is no exception,” he said.

Described as a quintessential country house, the Manse offers architectural symmetry, sandstone construction, cedar joinery, panelled doors, wide timber floors, open fireplaces, cedar window shutters, quoins, smooth ashlar, and tall stone chimneys.

It is set on 1973sq m of land with extensive lawns and gardens.

Mr Romeo said the four-bedroom Manse was built in 1860 — as a wedding gift — by George Wilson of Mount Seymour for his daughter Margaret and son-in-law Rev. Lachlan Campbell.

“After Rev. Campbell died in 1907, the family negotiated with the trustees and eventually purchased the Manse for £1100,” he said.

“The Manse has been used as a residence for ministers serving the Oatlands Presbyterian Parish since they purchased it in the early 1900s.

“During the 1940s it briefly housed the Women’s Land Army, formed to cover labour shortages in rural industries and farms while the men were away at war.

“In 1953, potatoes were grown on the adjoining 1.5 acres surrounding the Manse to raise funds for improvements to the manse and church.

“Over recent years, the Uniting Church has no longer used the property as it had in past years, and has made the decision to sell it to someone who will revive and utilise the property.”

Mr Romeo expects the next owner of the Manse will use it as a home.

“It was built as a private residence, has a wonderful floorplan with spacious rooms and would make a magnificent family home,” he said.

“However, as the short term accommodation market is strong in Tasmania, the Manse would be perfect for the exclusive heritage accommodation market.

“It is well positioned in Oatlands, one of Australia’s most intact and important historic Georgian townships.

“The Manse is considered one of the finest examples of Victorian Late Georgian architecture in Southern Tasmania and retains its architectural elegance.”

No.28 High St, Oatlands is listed for sale with Circa Heritage & Lifestyle. It will be sold by expressions of interest, closing on October 24, unless sold prior.
