An eclectic container home on an Adelaide Hills acreage provides a comfortable, off-grid lifestyle, along with opportunities to rebuild or subdivide and turn a tidy profit.
For sentimental reasons, vendor Jonathon Matthew, who built the custom-designed home at 170 Onkaparinga Valley Rd, Woodside with the help of his tradie mates, hopes the new owners will move in and love it just as much as he has.
But he recognises it’s just as likely the buyer will dismantle and sell the two-bedroom residence – providing significant funds to help realise their own dream home.
“Out of interest, I had a look at Gumtree and you could easily load (the house) into the back of a truck and sell it for $75,000, which could go towards your new build,’’ Mr Matthew said.
“It’s like Lego blocks. It would be very easy to move.’’

Selling agent Georgia Weston, from Raine and Horne, expects the property, set on an idyllic 4034sqm block with a winter creek, will also attract investors, with potential to split the land into up to four lots.
The property has been listed with a price guide of $800 to $880,000 – $114,568 above the Adelaide-wide median house price.
“You could go through the planning process (to subdivide and sell) and net a few hundred thousand dollars, easily,’’ Ms Weston said.
“It’s an interesting one. You could get someone (buy it) that loves the container ship home or a developer who lifts (removes) the container ship home and comes in and subdivides.’’
Mr Matthew said he was inspired to build the container home after seeing a similar project showcased on Grand Designs New Zealand.
Keen to minimise the unused space that plagues larger, traditional homes, without making it so small as to be impractical, Mr Matthew consulted friends on the amount of living area in their own homes that was regularly used.
He then settled on a build that provided 187sqm of residential space, which he believes will comfortably accommodate a small family – and could be affordably extended with further containers, if required.
Hidden from the road and surrounded by garden, including fruit trees and a large vegetable patch, the home is fully insulated, with split system airconditioning and a central slow combustion fire maintaining year-round comfort.
A humble open-plan kitchen and living space is timber lined but could be easily gyprocked and transformed.
“For 15 to 20 grand, you could do the interiors to look like a new home,’’ Mr Matthew said.
Having planned to live at the property long-term, Mr Matthew said the opportunity to buy a house with acreage in the Barossa Valley, near to his ageing parents, had prompted the sale.
“I’ve loved it here,’’ he said.
“I always wanted to build another two-storey container home (on the property) that straddled the creek, move into that one and use this as an Airbnb.
“Having that acreage and getting up with a coffee and walking around the fruit trees is just
so peaceful.’’
