Every season of The Block features supposedly grown adults acting like children, and it seems that moment has arrived for 2024.

Head child is Kylie, who’s had a face like a slapped arse since Maddy, 22, and Charlotte, 24, arrived to replace Paige and Jesse.

What their crimes are isn’t exactly clear. Apparently she believes Jesse and Paige’s house should have renovated itself? In any case, it’s hard to believe she’s a 37-year-old mother of four, because she’s acting like a 14-year-old mean girl, refusing to engage with the sisters, not clapping their win last week and making snide comments behind their backs.

But she’s not alone in being a jerk. Even amiable Ricky and Haydn have joined the pile on, in between planning the living and dining space.

As the other teams inspect Maddy and Charlotte’s winning bathroom Haydn calls it “vanilla”, Courtney says it lacks drama and Kylie admits “Even if it is nice I won’t say anything”.

Mimi sticks the boot in by making fun of the fact the sisters lit a candle in their room before the other teams inspected it.

“Did you see the candle? Why would they bother lighting it for us?” she sneers.

“I went to blow it out,” Brad offers.

“Thanks, baby,” Kylie replies.

Ugh.

When Maddy offers to make toasted sandwiches for her, Kylie cooly brushes her off, telling a producer “It’s just a circle that they’re not in”.

It’s not lost on the girls, who confide in last year’s contestants Liberty and Eliza when they go for their prize-winning night out with the pair.

As they try and make excuses for the other contestants, reasoning that maybe they’re just tired, Scott Cam stirs the pot by confirming that no, they’re not just tired, they really are talking smack about the girls.

It’s all getting Maddy down. She’s gutted that her Block experience isn’t turning out the way she’d hoped and after five hours of driving she arrives back on site and breaks down.

“I think it’s hard being away from people and your world and being in an environment where you don’t feel super embraced. I feel quite alone when it comes to the other contestants. I think you have a dream when you come on The Block that you’re going to make lifelong friends and you’re all in this together but I feel quite removed from the group. I feel we’re a bit on the side and that makes me sad,” she says.

Elsewhere, there’s plaster drama. The delivery truck has broken down, which means none of the contestants will get their plaster on Tuesday morning as planned. With most of them paying a team of plasterers to sit around and wait, a plan is hatched for it to arrive at 6pm — after the machinery use curfew — which means it will be need to be unloaded by hand by the contestants.

When Plan B falls through it looks like the plaster won’t be arriving until Wednesday morning. Kylie and Brad have the biggest living and dining room on the show, a whopping 75 sqm, and without starting their plastering bang on time they’re going to be hard pressed to finish the week.

Some might call it karma.
