Melbourne has hit back at further speculation Clayton Oliver is on his way out at the Demons, while a pick swap between clubs sparks considerable interest on day five of the AFL trade period.

Matthew Lloyd claimed on Friday Oliver — who is reportedly chasing a trade to Geelong — had already "cleaned out his locker" at the Demons' training facility.

"There are reports over the last 24 hours that he still wants out despite Melbourne saying they are not trading him," Lloyd told 3AW.

"And the fact that he's cleaned out his locker, a lot of people believe he's willing to take a pay cut and he just doesn't want to go back there.

"So after Christian Petracca and that debacle and now this one, it's an absolute mess down at Melbourne."

Demons interim president Brad Green dismissed Lloyd's suggestion, saying it was a "non story".

"Every player cleans out their locker every year," Green wrote on X.

Meanwhile, Hawthorn and Carlton sprung the first surprise of trade period with a draft pick swap that has major ramifications.

After an uneventful opening five days, the trade period had a major shake-up on Friday when Hawthorn gave its first-round number 14 draft selection in return for Carlton's 2025 first and second-round picks.

The number 14 pick was expected to feature in Hawthorn's efforts to recruit West Coast defender Tom Barrass.

The thinking had been that when that deal was struck, the Eagles would then use the selection to bring across Liam Baker from Richmond.

But it now gives Carlton extra leverage as it tries to lure two-time All-Australian defender Dan Houston from Port Adelaide.

The Blues already have the number 12 pick.

It also might mean West Coast is out of the running for Baker and it becomes more complicated for Barras to join Hawthorn.

Houston, Barrass and Baker are among several players who are waiting to learn their fates during the trade period.

Friday featured the first deals since the period opened on Monday, when Jack Darling joined North Melbourne and Alex Neal-Bullen went to Adelaide.

But none of the Friday trades involved any players.

Apart from the Hawthorn-Carlton bombshell, Brisbane traded it first-round draft selection at number 20 to Richmond for several second and third-round picks.

The Blues and Lions also struck a separate deal involving the swap of second and fourth-round picks in this year's draft.

Brisbane trades 2024 first-round pick (currently No.20) to Richmond for two 2024 second-round picks (No.32 and No.42) and two 2024 third-round picks (No.43 and No.45).

Carlton trades 2024 second-round pick (currently No.34) and a 2024 fourth-round pick (No.66) to Brisbane for a 2024 fourth-round pick (currently No.73) and a 2025 second-round pick.

Hawthorn trades 2024 first-round pick (currently No.14) to Carlton for a 2025 first-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick (tied to Carlton).

That's stumps!

We're calling it a day on the ABC Sport AFL trade period blog, so thanks for joining us.

We got some excitement from the earlier pick swaps (see pinned post), while the speculation surrounding Clayton Oliver's future at the Demons keeps swirling.

There is still plenty to play out when trade period resumes on day six.

Until then, bye for now!

Saints announce coaching update

We're clearly in junk time on day five, so we have no fresh trade news to give you.

But …

St Kilda has confirmed Brendon Goddard will coach Sandringham in the 2025 VFL season, as well as hold down a development coaching role at St Kilda.

"We're really pleased to have Brendon locked in to coach our VFL team next year," Saints EGM football David Misson said in a statement.

"Brendon has really gone from strength to strength in his coaching since returning to the Saints and we see a long career in this space ahead of him.

"Coaching your own team puts challenges in front of you that you don't face in a line coaching position, so by jumping into the VFL space, we believe it will really aid Brendon's development."

The Saints says they will confirm their full football department line-up in the coming weeks.

Congrats to the Selwoods

Dees say Oliver locker cleanout claim is a 'non story'

Chris mentioned earlier that Matthew Lloyd claimed Clayton Oliver had already cleaned out his locker at Demons HQ.

It was a comment that left interim Demons president Brad Green unimpressed.

Friday winding down

Thanks to Chris De Silva for doing the hard yards today, as we edge closer to the end of day five.

Still a bit of time left before we call a halt to proceedings, so let's see if any trades come through in the last hour or so.

I bid you farewell for the week

It has come that time of the afternoon where I must bid you farewell.

I'm handing the blog over to the very capable hands of my ABC Sport colleague Luke Pentony who will take you through to the end of the day's play.

Thank you for spending your time with us again, and I'll see you all on Monday morning for more trade action.

Suns rule out young gun in Collingwood trade

Chris De Silva profile image

Gold Coast has put youngster Bailey Humphrey off-limits in a trade with Collingwood for John Noble.

According to AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey, "the Magpies flagged their interest in Humphrey as part of talks to progress the trade sending Noble to the Suns, however Gold Coast has blocked any chance of the exciting midfielder/forward being part of any deal."

Noble's move to the Suns is tied in with Collingwood's hunt for Dan Houston and Port Adelaide's potential move for Jack Lukosius.

More on the Melbourne and Oliver saga

Chris De Silva profile image

Referring back to Daves question "What happens if Clayton Oliver stays at Melbourne? How will they let oliver just walk out with a six year contract.

- Henry

Hi Henry,

A very important factor in this whole saga is PR and Melbourne's relationship with its members and fans.

If the Demons came out on the opening day of the trade period and entertained a trade with Geelong for Clayton Oliver, it removes any bit of leverage they have, but it also sends a poor message to the club's members.

They're walking a tightrope at the moment between pleasing their members and doing what's best for their club and their future.

Could the Blues chase after Tom Barrass?

Chris De Silva profile image

Tom Barrass to Carlton instead of Houston..?

- Viscount Bradford

Hi Viscount,

You're certainly not the first person to suggest Carlton should go after Tom Barrass.

Here's Brad Johnson on Trade Radio a little while ago.

What would a trade for me look like?

Chris De Silva profile image

G'day Chris. Here's one for you: What do you think would be a fair trade for your services, if the ABC were to deal you to a rival organisation? Do you consider yourself worthy of a first-round selection?

- Jordan

Hi Jordan,

I reckon ABC would ask for at least three first-rounders and two future pick swaps to even entertain a deal.

What happens if Clayton Oliver stays at Melbourne?

Chris De Silva profile image

If Oliver doesn't get traded, and he refuses to play, what happens? Is he in breach of contract or something? I can't see how that outcome benefits ANYONE - his club, his suitors, or the player himself.

- Dave

Hi Dave,

You're right, that would be a really ugly look for Oliver, the Demons and the AFL, which is why I think it wouldn't happen.

If the relationship really is beyond repair, then Melbourne will trade him simply to avoid this scenario.

Oliver needs to rehab his own value as well, so he'd be best served to stay on the park next year, even if it's at the Demons.

What is the right price for Daniel Rioli?

Chris De Silva profile image

Am I wrong or would Richmond be utterly mad not to immediately say yes to Gold Coast's offer of pick six?

- I am not wrong.

Hi I am not wrong,

As your name suggests, you are not wrong, pick 6 seems like a really fair offer for Daniel Rioli.

It'll probably end up being pick 6 and a really late pick that gets that deal done I'd imagine.

Clubs loooove haggling over late picks that they don't even end up using.

Will Tom Barrass go somewhere else?

Chris De Silva profile image

Is Barrass 100% committed to a move to Victoria only? Flirted with a move to Sydney last year and the Swans could certainly use a player of his aerial capability…

- Jonty

We've had a few questions about whether Tom Barrass would pivot and move somewhere else.

So far there's been no indication of this happening despite a flirtation with the Swans last year, as Jonty mentions here.

What's the latest on Clayton Oliver and Bailey Smith?

Chris De Silva profile image

Anything latest on clayton oliver and bailey smith.

- Jarod

Hi Jarod,

There's been nothing official in terms of an update on Bailey Smith today.

The last we've heard is Geelong has offered pick 17, but the Bulldogs want more.

In terms of Clayton Oliver, recent reports suggest he still wants out of Melbourne, but Geelong hasn't tabled an offer yet to the Demons.

Will the real Dan stand up?

Chris De Silva profile image

I'm so impressed about Dan

- Jade

Hi Jade,

Which Dan are we talking about? Rioli? Riccardo? Houston? ABC Sport's very own Dan Miles?

Where will Chad Warner end up?

Chris De Silva profile image

Do you think Chad Warner is more likely to get home after the woeful GF? Is so what would freo need to produce to get Bolton and Warner.

- Nick

Hi Nick,

Both Fremantle and Sydney have shot down the prospect of Chad Warner being traded this season.

I'd imagine Freo will find it pretty hard to fit him into their cap, giving the Eagles an upper hand.

Where does Dan Houston want to go?

Chris De Silva profile image

Is there any word on Houstons preferred destinationa dn should we expect to hear soon or will it just be a race of who gets pick 13?

- Taiven

Hi Taiven,

Dan Houston still hasn't officially requested a trade a particular club.

Recent reports seem to suggest Collingwood is his favoured destination.

Not much value in a contract these days

Chris De Silva profile image

Are contracts worth much if anything? Ie Players sign them but then think they might like a change. Wow. Very immaturity poor way to operate . Some growing up may be in order.

- Clive Nicholson

Hi Clive,

It definitely seems like the value of a contract doesn't really mean much these days.

It's basically both players and teams protecting themselves.

Players can lock in guaranteed money as security, and teams can lock in players long-term and then command big trade hauls if they want out a few years after signing.

It's the league boss!

Chris De Silva profile image

Hey Chris, do you think that there are other Victorian clubs now on Tom Barrass watch considering Hawthorn trading out pick 14?

- Andrew Dillon

Hello Mr Dillon,

My question is what do YOU think, as the AFL CEO?
