A 22-year-old interstate tourist has been assisted from near Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, after attempting to climb it without shoes.

Police said emergency services were contacted by the man at 7:30am on Saturday morning, at which point he had been hiking for about an hour.

He told them he was attempting to climb Cradle Mountain, in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, without footwear, and that his feet were "frost-bitten and injured" and he was unable to walk.

"He was accompanied back to the Dove Lake viewing centre."

Police said that although the weather was fine at the Tasmanian national park, the temperature was in the negatives.

They have reminded walkers of the importance of being properly prepared with equipment and experience if venturing into the wilderness.

A number of rescues have taken place in Tasmania in recent months, including a family who became stranded, with hypothermia, in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park during a hike.

More than a dozen walkers also had to be rescued from kunanyi/Mt Wellington in Hobart last month after venturing out during severe weather.
