Hawthorn has moved to top spot on the AFLW ladder after thrashing West Coast by 66 points.

The free-scoring Hawks dominated after quarter time at home in Frankston on Saturday, mauling the Eagles 11.8 (74) to 1.2 (8).

It was five points short of Hawthorn's highest score and the equal-third lowest total for West Coast.

Aileen Gilroy starred for the Hawks with three goals, and captain Emily Bates and Lousie Stephenson added two majors.

Bates, who also collected 22 disposals, was rapt with how her side played in their fourth-straight win.

"I'm really proud of the group, just being able to put more speed on the ball, play our way," she said.

The Hawks continue to show they are premiership contenders after finishing 15th and 16th in their first two AFLW seasons.

They are ahead of the Brisbane Lions on the ladder via superior percentage and have played one match more than third-placed North Melbourne, who host Sydney in Hobart on Sunday.

West Coast's heavy loss put a dent in its finals hopes.

The Eagles are 10th, level on points with eighth-placed St Kilda, but their low percentage effectively puts them a match behind.

Kellie Gibson kicked the Eagles' lone goal against the Hawks.

There could be match review trouble for Hawthorn, however, after two incidents late in the match as tempers flared.

First, Eagles star Jess Hosking had to leave the field when she was caught high and then dumped in a fierce tackle from Jess Vukic.

As a 50-metre penalty was paid against the Hawks, there was some push-and-shove off the ball between Hawthorn's Ainslie Kemp and Gibson.

Kemp floored Gibson with a push to the ribs and the Eagles player was also forced off the ground.

Lions victorious in Q-Clash

The Brisbane Lions held on to beat the Gold Coast Suns by 16 points and equal their club record of seven straight wins.

The winless Suns took it up to the reigning premiers in their first visit to Springfield but remain without a Q-Clash victory as the Lions held on 6.8 (44) to 4.4 (28).

Suns captain Tara Bohanna kicked the opening goal of the last term, reducing the margin to six points.

But as the rain arrived for the final quarter, the experienced Lions steadied and eventually the pressure told on the Suns' defence.

Dakota Davidson marked and kicked her only goal of the match with less than five minutes left to seal the win.

Lions midfielder Belle Dawes was best afield with 27 disposals, 21 of them contested.

The Suns were relentless and no goals were kicked in the third term.

Brisbane forward Taylor Smith extended her lead as the top goal-kicker this season, kicking the Lions' two majors in the opening term and taking her tally to 16.

Taya Oliver also kicked their first two AFLW goals as the Suns went toe-to-toe with the Lions and trailed by two points at quarter-time.

The Lions threatened to break the match open in the second quarter with three goals to one and led by 14 points at the main break.

Brisbane ball magnet Ally Anderson racked up 20 disposals in the opening half and had 31 for the match, with six clearances and eight tackles.

The match became a grind in the third quarter, with no goals scored, as Suns midfield ace Charlie Rowbottom started to shake Cathy Svarc's tag.

After only six possessions to half-time, Rowbottom racked up seven in the third term and had a tussle with Svarc on the three-quarter-time siren.

Rowbottom had another eight in the last quarter for a team-high 21 disposals, with six clearances and five tackles.

Tigers snatch thrilling win over Cats

Emelia Yassir kicked three goals to lead Richmond to a thrilling seven-point victory over Geelong.

In a final quarter that featured five lead changes, late goals to Yassir and Katie Brennan lifted Richmond to the 6.10 (46) to 5.9 (39) win at Punt Road.

The result improved the Tigers to a 6-2 win-loss record and put them right in the mix for a top-four berth.

But the Cats — with two victories, five losses and one draw to their name — are almost certain to miss the finals, even if they win their remaining three matches.

Star Richmond midfielder Monique Conti racked up 27 disposals, seven clearances and a goal.

Katie Brennan and Eilish Sheerin also managed to kick majors.

Jacquelin Parry kicked a double for the Cats and Aishling Moloney (23 disposals, one goal) produced a dazzling display.

The Cats held a two-point lead at three-quarter time but the danger signs were there for the visitors early in the final term.

Brennan thought she had scored a goal, only for her snap to be touched on the line, before Conti's flying shot from 65 metres rolled into the post, levelling the scores with more than 14 minutes remaining.

Sheerin's snap from the pocket gave the Tigers the lead, before Kate Darby put Geelong back in front with less than five minutes to go.

But Richmond came up trumps when it mattered most, with Yassir nailing a set-shot from a tight angle, before Brennan put the icing on the cake with her late goal.

Blues stun Fremantle in final-minute frenzy

Keeley Sherar has kicked a goal with less than a minute remaining to lift Carlton to a shock four-point AFLW victory over Fremantle at Fremantle Oval.

The Blues trailed by 10 points at three-quarter time of Saturday's match, and Fremantle were still clinging to a three-point lead with a minute remaining.

But amidst a mad scramble in Carlton's forward line, the ball dribbled out to Sherar, who scooped it up and threw it on her boot for the match-winner with 50 seconds remaining.

The 5.4 (34) to 4.6 (30) win marked Carlton's third of the season, keeping their slim finals hopes alive.

Fremantle (5-3) now face an uphill battle to snare a top-four berth following consecutive home defeats.

Carlton's Breann Moody, in her 75-game milestone match, revealed she wasn't sure whether her team had actually beaten Fremantle or not.

"I was looking at the scoreboard and I couldn't tell we were in front. But so glad we could get it done," Moody told the Seven Network.

"It feels unreal. So much belief in this group. We knew it was going to be a contested game.

"It went right down to the wire. A win while we're travelling is always special."

The win came at a cost, with Carlton's Lily Goss carried off in the third quarter and taken to hospital after suffering a badly rolled right ankle.

Stand-in Fremantle captain Hayley Miller was also a late withdrawal with calf tightness.

Fremantle ruck Mim Strom tallied 47 hit-outs in the heavily congested game, but Carlton won the clearances 33-27, including 7-3 at centre clearances.

Madeleine Guerin (24 disposals, six clearances, 454m gained) led the way for Carlton, with Sherar (17 disposals, six clearances, one goal) also crucial.

Gabrielle Newton racked up 23 disposals and six clearances for the Dockers.
