Shai Bolton is officially a Fremantle player, with Richmond receiving a bounty of draft picks in return, while a number of stars face a nervous wait on the final day of the AFL trade period.

The futures of Bailey Smith, Jack Macrae, Jake Stringer and a host of other players remain up in the air as the 7.30pm AEDT deadline approaches.

Follow our live blog below to keep up to date with all the latest news and confirmed deals.

CONFIRMED DEALS FROM THE AFL TRADE PERIOD DEADLINE DAY

Chris De Silva profile image

Richmond trades Shai Bolton, a 2024 first-round pick (currently No.14), and a 2025 third-round pick to Fremantle for three 2024 first-round picks (currently Nos. 10, 11 and 18).

How does Hawthorn land Tom Barrass?

Chris De Silva profile image

Hi Chris. Thank you for your insight to my question earlier. I have another question: How do the Hawks land Tom Barrass before the deadline?

- Floberts

Hi Floberts,

The latest reports around Tom Barrass suggest Hawthorn has offered a future first-round pick and a future second-round pick to West Coast.

It remains to be seen if that appeases the Eagles, who are looking to win back some support from their members after yesterday's three-team trade.

Where Bailey Smith might go in the national draft

Chris De Silva profile image

I've got a few questions regarding Bailey Smith as well.

As we've mentioned throughout the trade period, Smith will head to either the national draft or the pre-season draft (which occurs a few days after the national draft) if Geelong and the Western Bulldogs do not reach an agreement on a trade.

Geelong would most likely use its first-round pick (currently No.17) to add Smith via the national draft.

They aren't obligated to use this pick on him and could wait until their second pick (currently No.38) to add him, but that invites the risk of other clubs drafting him.

There is no rule stopping any of the AFL's other clubs, including the Bulldogs, from drafting Smith.

Where St Kilda currently stands

Chris De Silva profile image

How would you assess St Kilda's position going into the draft as it stands? We have such a bad history of poor choices... and I can't help but reflect on Grant Thomas's criticism of trading like we are a top 4 team instead of a Team needing to look for a proper build up. Especially with Tassie incoming.

- David

Hi David,

The Saints are certainly in an interesting position.

They made the finals last year, and then took a step backwards this year.

They scored a massive win by getting an extra top-10 pick from the AFL as compensation for Josh Battle, and really need to nail those picks if they're to make a serious move up the ladder.

It's a list that is packed with talent all over the ground, but they've got to start delivering sooner rather than later.

What will Brodie Kemp cost the Saints?

Chris De Silva profile image

St Kilda is interested in grabbing Brodie Kemp from Carlton.

Here's what AFL.com.au's Riley Beveridge thinks of those trade negotiations.

"I think it has to be pick 32," he told Trade Radio.

"He is interested in a move to St Kilda where he will get more opportunity. It will be right on the fringes if that is enough to get Brodie Kemp to the Saints."

Could the Tigers trade up the draft?

Chris De Silva profile image

I've received a few questions about this, so I'll answer it together here.

Yes, Richmond is definitely a contender to trade up the draft, given how many picks it now has.

However, I don't think this will happen today itself.

A reminder that clubs are allowed to continue trading draft picks (both in this year and the future) right up until the draft, and on the draft night as well!

Xavier O'Halloran's chances of being a Bulldog increasing

Chris De Silva profile image

AFL.com.au's Riley Beveridge reporting that GWS seems to be softening its stance on trading Xavier O'Halloran, who wants to join the Bulldogs.

O'Halloran's fate could be tied to that of Caleb Daniel, who is seeking a move to the Kangaroos.

Answering Oliver's survey

Chris De Silva profile image

hey chris have loved the work over the last couple weeks do you think bailey smith gets to the cats and what for and where does stringer end up and sorry for the three questions but in your opinion who won the power suns pies trade. Thank you for the work you have done

- olivER T

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for following this year's blog! I'll answer your questions one by one.

1. I think Bailey Smith does get to the Cats because the Bulldogs would be silly to lose him for nothing in the draft.

2. Jake Stringer will end up a GWS player, it's just a matter of haggling over late picks.

3. The clear winner of the three-team trade from yesterday has to be Collingwood simply because they walk away with the best player in Dan Houston.

OFFICIAL: Shai Bolton traded to Fremantle for three first-round picks

Chris De Silva profile image

And just like that, we've got the first official trade of the deadline!

Here are the details of Shai Bolton's move to Fremantle.

Where's Tim Membrey headed?

Chris De Silva profile image

Hi Chris, have loved your work in the past week. Any movement surrounding Tim Membrey this afternoon? Collingwood still a chance?

- Joey

Hi Joey, thanks for following!

I think Tim Membrey ends up at Collingwood by the sounds of things.

Still waiting on an official trade

Shai Bolton's move to Fremantle is expected to be made official shortly.

The Richmond and Fremantle camps were in the room with the AFL finalising the deal a short time ago.

Post trade-week blog plans

Chris De Silva profile image

What are you doing post trade period Chris? Surely get this blog going once a week during the footy season?

- Tim Kelly

Hi Tim,

I actually have no idea what I'm going to do without trade week in my life.

It has brought me an unbelievable amount of joy.

Dreaming of Bobby Hill at the Bombers

Chris De Silva profile image

How good would Bobby Hill have been at the dons?

- Barlgle

Hi Barlgle,

Don't remind me.

Bobby Hill and Isaac Kako in the same forward line would have been must-watch TV.

Although, it's hard to argue with how well the move to Collingwood has worked out for Bobby.

Can't do much better than a premiership and a Norm Smith in your first year at a new home.

Is it Bombers pile-on o'clock?

Chris De Silva profile image

Maybe we should take a break from the WA civil war for a good ol fashioned bombers pile on. It's been about 7,347 days in the making eh Chris?

- LW

Hi LW,

If there is a Bombers pile-on, I'll be the first to jump on them.

Any danger of some success?

An excellent point on player movement

In response to this commentary: Should teams take back the power? By Chris De Silva Managers and AFLPA have too much control over trades. People getting paid 500K being picky where they live is silly. Bring in a cut throat style of trading like the NBA. - N Hi N, You're certainly not alone in thinking like this. It would make for more entertainment if clubs could just trade players wherever they please. The AFL Players' Association would never agree to that though. *my thoughts* While it would make it interesting, what it also does is ignore the consideration of the importance of Country for First Nations players and their/families wellbeing. Plenty of evidence surrounding that, as well as evidence of players requesting to return to their home clubs. This is a unique consideration for AFL, that sports like the NBA and NFL don't have the same number of First Nations players to necessitate such a consideration.

- Naomi

Hi Naomi,

Just echoing what I said before as well, I totally agree with you. I think it's far too easy for us to forget the human aspect of player movement.

The harsh truth of the trade period

Chris De Silva profile image

Happy to keep the banter going with the old bunch at WC, obviously they need all of the help they can get, especially now we have the game breaker (Bolton) - Anyway, its got to be fairly awkward with these players looking to move aka TB, Oliver, Parker, Etc - then not finding a home then having to put their tail between the legs and come back.

- FreoHB

Hi FreoHB,

That's definitely the ugliest part of the trade period, I agree.

We saw a few years ago in the trade documentary that came out how Bobby Hill was reduced to tears when his move to Essendon was denied.

People forget that there are real lives at stake in these trade negotiations.

A live look at me remembering Kent Kingsley kicking bags against the Bombers

Chris De Silva profile image

Chris, which three team player had the best career at his second club compared to his first and third clubs, and why is the answer Kent Kingsley. Thank you for the distraction today, love your work.

- KP

Hi KP,

Still too soon mate.

History in the making

Chris De Silva profile image

Hello Chris: one day some enterprising historian is going to attempt to write a thesis on the historical development of the AFL trade system as an example of modern (or is that post modern) capitalism at work. I hope you are keeping an archive of all your stuff for her/him to consult. Cheerio (and thanks for your insights)

- Paddy

Hi Paddy,

I'll be happy to talk to any historian about this WA trade feud that has kicked off between Freo and West Coast fans in my comments over the last few days.

What a time it's been.

ITS TRADE TIME!

Chris De Silva profile image

2PM IS HERE LETS GOOOOOOOOO!

A temperature check on Deven Robertson

Chris De Silva profile image

Is Dev Robertson to the eagles still any chance with Collingwood ruling themselves out. Or he staying at Brisbane.

- Rob

Hi Rob,

I'd say it's definitely between West Coast and Brisbane for Deven Robertson.
