95 North Mountain Rd, Heathcote Junction - for herald sun real estate

Former North Melbourne dual Premiership captain Wayne Carey is dipping his toe into real estate to help sell a Heathcote Junction property featuring its own private pub.

In the 1990s, the Kangaroos star captained the team to two grand finals, and later spent time at Adelaide.

Carey was named as the AFL’s greatest ever player in a book listing the top 50 players of all time, released by the league in 2008.

The AFL Hall of Famer is a seven-time All-Australian and four-time North Melbourne best and fairest recipient.

Since leaving the sport he has worked as a footy commentator, television panellist and podcast host.

In 2023, Carey also appeared in a listing video for a North Melbourne apartment, as organised by ex-Richmond player turned O’Brien Real Estate property consultant and auctioneer, John Rombotis.

‘The Duck’, as Carey is also known, is now starring in another real estate video to spruik a sprawling 4221sq m address at 95 N Mountain Rd, that’s for sale with a $1.8m-$1.98m price tag.

The main living area is home to a bar and billiards’ space – and plenty of North Melbourne meorabillia.

Wayne Carey introduces the property in the listing video.

The property consists of an updated, circa-1906 three-bedroom cottage, a five-bedroom house and a self-contained bungalow near its dam.

In the clip, Carey is wowed by the home’s “unique” look and talks about how the main house’s upstairs area would be perfect for children to play hide-and-seek in.

Listing agent Mr Rombotis said the abode’s owners were massive North Melbourne fans and had previously met Carey through mutual friends.

The five-bedroom house features its own bar and billiards’ area that Mr Rombotis described as

“like an old-fashioned pub that you see in England”.

The owner, a builder, and his wife, an accomplished carpenter herself, lived in the cottage while they built the larger house.

The kitchen is fitted with materials including red gum, jarrah timber and steel.

Kicking off the project in 2006, they also built a second bar in their garage and workshop.

They incorporated a cupboard door, sourced from Melbourne’s 1861-built Young and Jackson hotel, into the main bar.

The owner said that along with his wife and three sons, he has hosted many parties and special occasions at the home.

And after filming the video, Carey joined them for a drink at the bar.

The owner said his other cherished memories included spending time in the outdoor entertaining area, equipped with a spa and pizza oven, and at the dam’s jetty.

He incorporated materials including red gum, jarrah timber and steel, plus an indoor waterfall and series of ponds, into the home.

“I just didn’t want to live in a house that was all white,” he said.

Carey isn’t the only former footballer Mr Rombotis has recruited to assist with marketing campaigns.

He recently listed a Berwick house, that sold for an undisclosed price of between $7m-$7.5m, that AFL legend Kevin Sheedy acted as an ambassador for by appearing at some private inspections.

Expressions of interest close November 28.
