Not afraid of ghosts? Then buying a home in Australia’s most haunted town surely won’t have you spooked.

Located just over an hour’s drive north of Adelaide, Kapunda frequently comes up in google searches as being Australia’s most haunted town – partially because of a paranormal documentary by Warwick Moss, which saw hundreds of ghost-hunters rush to the ruins of St John’s Reformatory.

The reformatory was used for orphan girls from 1897 until 1909, when it was left to fall into ruin.

It is said that many of the girls tried to escape, but unfortunately two dorms were turned into virtual cells.

The story goes that a girl called Ruby Bland, who was 18 and pregnant, died under suspicious circumstances and her ghost now haunts the cemetery, looking for her baby.

Meanwhile, Rev Martin – the head of the reformatory – was reportedly mentally unstable and unsupervised by his superiors.

The doco was based on a story that in 1980, 15 students from Kapunda saw a marble slab move back from one the graves at the cemetery, and then a semitransparent girl carrying a hurricane lantern that had a yellowish glow moving through the cemetery.

People have also since described the feeling of being watched while taking photos in the cemetery.

It also wasn’t long after the doco aired that the reformatory was demolished by the Catholic Church, citing safety concerns. It is now the cemetery that’s reputedly haunted.

But the town’s spooky tales don’t stop here.

First opened in 1849, The North Kapunda Hotel, which starred on the international hit television show ‘Haunting: Australia’ some years ago, has played an important part in the town’s history which, no doubt, contributed to the many reports of paranormal activity within the pub.

Legend has it that two young girls haunt the upstairs former accommodation rooms.

One of these girls, Emily, is commonly seen sitting on a windowsill of a room overlooking the pub’s courtyard, while seven-year old Sarah has her own room upstairs.

While not much is known about Emily’s death, Sarah is rumoured to have been pushed off the pub’s balcony and she saw her saw her murderer as she fell to her death.

Another ghostly resident is Matthew Henry Smyth Blood, better known as Dr Blood.

The town’s first general practitioner, Dr Blood was rumoured to have performed strange human experiments in life and mystery continues to surround him in death.
