AN iconic 100ha Derwent Valley property has hit the market.

Known for its fertile land, its past as a hop farm, then later a single-malt whisky distillery — and of course for its gorgeous, historic homestead — Redlands Estate is certain to be highly sought-after.

Located about a 10-minute drive from New Norfolk, No.759 Glenora Rd, Plenty is described as “a breathtaking landholding”.

Buyers take the driver’s seat as Hobart listings surge

Colliers national director Tim Altschwager said the property offers buyers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and agricultural potential.

He said Redlands is located in a picturesque corner of Tasmania, with this estate boasting a historic homestead surrounded by established English-style gardens, spanning 103.7ha and within a single Certificate of Title.

“Established in 1819, the estate was one of the first irrigated farms in Australia,” Mr Altschwager said.

“After being substantially developed in the 1840s, it was known for its extensive hop farming, becoming one of the largest hop farms in the country.

“The estate grew substantially and had its own village, including a butcher, shop, bell tower and bakery.

“Redlands became a notable Tasmanian whisky producer after establishing a distillery in 2008.”

Mr Altschwager said the property benefits from its productive land, which is well suited for various agricultural pursuits.

He said the existing improvements, including the grand homestead and substantial outbuildings, could potentially be transformed to facilitate weddings and other functions, subject to council approvals.”

The property is situated on the banks of the Plenty River, a popular trout fishing destination, conveniently located 45 minutes from Hobart.

The property is currently vacant.

Historically, few Tasmanian properties have as rich a history as Redlands Estate.

While the Port Arthur penal settlement began life as a small timber station in 1830, Redlands’ story dates further back to 1819.

Redlands was established when 800 acres of land was granted to George Frederick Read — a merchant, settler, banker and the not formally recognised son of King George IV of England.

He was one of the original proprietors of the Bank of Van Diemen’s Land.

The property is known for having the oldest Magnolia tree in Australia, and for its bakery, which was constructed in 1822.

And in 1845, a lessee of the property was held up by infamous bushranger William Westwood, also known as Jacky Jacky.

No.759 Glenora Rd, Plenty, is listed for sale with Colliers International and will be sold by expressions of interest.
