An award-winning property that was once voted Australia’s favourite home has hit the market, and it comes with an innovative aviary-style design that takes indoor-outdoor living to a whole new level.

Located right in the heart of New Farm, 91 Oxlade Dr was designed by renowned Brisbane architect James Russell and includes four bedrooms, guest quarters and a swimming pool in a two-storey home with a distinctive pavilion design.

Loo-dicrous way to add thousands to your home value

Connected by a series of courtyards, the entire home is enveloped in an aviary-style enclosure, and according to owner Louise FitzGerald it’s a game changing feature that reimagines Queensland living.

“We were originally from Sydney and were a bit worried about insects and mozzies,” Ms FitzGerald said.

“So James came up with this idea to wrap the whole house in shadecloth, creating a full connection between the inside and outside areas.

“It was one of those leaps of faith that you take with an architect as it hadn’t been done before on a residential building.”

That ‘leap of faith’ paid off.

Abandoned hoarder house’s stunning ace card

Completed in 2011, the home picked up a series of awards including a national accolade from the Australian Institute or Architects and the People’s Choice award for Residential Architecture.

But Ms FitzGerald said the true testament to its design was the home’s welcoming feel and family functionality.

“We have loved living there as it’s just this open and calming space,” she said.

“You feel protected from the elements but connected to the outside.”

Key to the home’s appeal is its mid-century modern influence and versatility.

The rear guest area doubles as a media room or home office and boasts a library tucked into the double height void that is accessed via a ladder.

Meanwhile, the carport can be used as an outdoor games room for table tennis, and the driveway is an ideal mini basketball court.

The pavilions are linked together by a breezeway and courtyards, with stackable doors allowing the entire home to open up and connect.

“James really thought about how the property would look and feel from different perspectives and he had a vision to create something special,” Ms FitzGerald said.

“There are so many little spaces that surprise you.

“The biggest learning was you can get so much more out of a house when you work with someone who looks at how you will use that space.”

Ms FitzGerald said the property’s design allowed it to cater to her family as her three children grew from babies to toddlers then teens, and also made it great for entertaining.

“We recently had my daughter’s 18th birthday here with a dinner party for 30 people,” she said.

“We set up a table along the brick seat in the courtyard, had lots of party lights and it was beautiful.”

Situated within easy reach of the River Walk, Merthyr Village and James St, the home’s central location is also a drawcard, while its unique design has seen it feature in the Brisbane Open House program along with countless books and magazines.

“James’s philosophy is to challenge what you need to live in Queensland,” Ms FitzGerald said.

“He delivered something that really meets people’s needs in terms of how we interact with each other, and also how the house interacts with the environment.

“It felt like that vision was a gift and then we got to enjoy living in it.”

The property is listed with Matt Lancashire of Ray White New Farm and is set to go to auction on November 30.
