Australia has fallen to a 3-1 defeat in a fractious, high-octane contest against Brazil at Lang Park in which Matildas coach Tom Sermanni said the referee "allowed herself to be bullied".

Amanda Gutierres scored twice in the first half for Brazil, before Caitlin Foord hit back just before half time, to the delight of the majority of the 47,501 supporters.

Giovana Queiroz restored Brazil's two-goal lead soon after, but were forced to hang on late after Vitória de Jesus Santos Calhau was sent off for a second yellow card.

On a match that kicked off with an emotional tribute to retiring legend Clare Polkinghorne, any thoughts that this would be a sentimental exhibition were dashed immediately by two teams desperately playing high-octane football from the off, led by a Brazil team who flew into challenges throughout.

"We knew that was going to happen," Sermanni told Channel 10.

"Unfortunately, particularly in the first half, we didn't deal with it very well.

"It was a very physical game. I think the referee allowed herself to be bullied a bit tonight and a few early yellow cards might have changed some of the dynamics of the game."

Brazil were far from bowed by the occasion, launching into the Matildas and capitalising on some sloppy defending.

Gutierres pounced twice in the first quarter of an hour, exploiting gaps in the three-player defence created by some rapid counter attacks.

The Matildas continued to push, thwarted at times by some extraordinarily physical defending from the South American champions, but seemed always vulnerable on the counter.

Caitlin Foord and Hayley Raso in particular cut frustrated figures after being man-handled by the Brazilian defence, but Foord continued to press and scored a phenomenal goal, muscling her way into space to turn and shoot in the penalty area.

As much as the Matildas wanted to press, that was the Matildas only shot at goal until substitute Sharn Freier had two efforts deep into stoppage time.

By then, Brazil had caught the Matildas on the counter attack again, Gio scoring after picking Ellie Carpenter's pocket at the back and racing through to score.

"Overall I can't have any complaints about the result. I think it was fair," Sermanni said.

"Ironically, just when we were beginning to get a foothold in the game, woe made a mistake for the third goal and it set us back again. It was a good competitive game and we go away with things to work at."

From that point on the home fans grew increasingly restless as Brazil resorted to the dark arts, and both sets of players suffered with cramping in the hot and humid conditions.

That heated on-field atmosphere saw Vitória sent off after delaying a Carpenter free kick, a much delayed send off as far as the hosts were concerned.

That heated atmosphere may well follow the two teams to Robina on the Gold Coast, where the two teams will once again lock horns on Sunday night.

Look back on how all the action unfolded in our live blog.

We'll wrap things up here

Thanks so much for joining us late into the night.

A disappointing end for the Matildas.

But don't stress! They'll be back in action on Sunday on the Gold Coast.

A chance for revenge? Perhaps.

But, as has just been confirmed by Clare Polkinghorne, it will be a chance to see her play again, as she remains in the squad for the next four games.

We'll be able to bring you more action from these internationals in the next few days. Until then though, good night.

Sad times in Polks' farewell game

Brazil were the better team out there both on the scoresheet and in key stats but the refereeing was appalling with clear bias against the Matildas, and the Brazilians were lucky to only have one player sent off.

Great learning experience

Simon Smale profile image

Brazil are a very smart, skilful and tough football nation. We will learn a lot playing in these games.

- Bill

There were some experienced players in gold tonight - but some of the younger ones will take an awful lot out of that.

Tough defeat for the Tillies

Simon Smale profile image

Truly the dirtiest team I’ve seen in a football game since I started following the Tillies. Some disgraceful behaviour from Brazil and appalling refereeing to top it off. I hope the girls don’t take this loss too hard, they’ve been up against it!

- Go Tillies

You'd like to think they would have learned an awful lot from that contest.

It was brutal at times.

But there were a lot of valuable lessons that Tom Sermanni would have been able to take from it I'm sure.

That being said, I am sure he'd prefer a referee who can use their cards in future...

The players are out of it

It will be interesting to see how we back this game up in just 3 days time. I hope our squad holds up.

- Bill

They all look absolutely shattered.

It's been a hot, sticky night and both sides have given everything over 90+ minutes of football.

Full time! Matildas fall to defeat

Simon Smale profile image

After a solid 14 minutes of added time, all the players sink to their knees or just collapse on the ground.

A thrilling, brutal, gritty, tough game between two teams that are more than familiar with each other and not afraid to show it.

It was physical at times, down right dirty at others.

But the Brazilians have come out on top 3-1.

90+12' Chance Matildas!

Sharn Freier again!

She has shot inside the penalty area and this one is blocked!

Such bad luck for the youngster.

It's the first two shots on target the Matildas have had since Foord's opening goal.

That was the only other one in the game, by the way.

90+11' Chance Matildas

What a save from Lorena!

A point-blank stop from a Sharn Freier shot - it would have been the Redcliffe star's first international goal, and it look a blinder of a save to deny her.

90+7' Chance Brazil

There are bodies littered all over the place in the Matildas' attacking half after they lose the ball.

Gio picks up the ball and races towards the edge of the Matildas penalty area.

She slams a shot towards goal and narrowly misses the target.

Great counter attack from Brazil.

Some unhappy punters

Simon Smale profile image

This is pretty dirty football. Disappointed in the refs and proud of the Tillies for valiantly keeping it mostly clean in our side!

- lulu

Some Brazilian players very unprofessional and dangerous

- Cecilia

Brazil seem to have the edge in ball control topped off with a bit more mongrel.

- Richard

Brazil are giving a lesson in the darkest of dark arts here.

90+3' Raso is down

Simon Smale profile image

She has not stopped running all night and is now down holding her calf.

The Gold Coast girl will be desperate not to miss out on Sunday at Robina. But she's going to keep going.

90+2' Brazil escape another send off

Simon Smale profile image

Giovana Queiroz is lucky to still be on the pitch.

She has pulled Kyra Cooney-Cross back when the Matildas midfielder was trying to break away.

It's a clear yellow card every day of the week - and would have been Gio's second.

But not given here.

90+1' There will be 11 additional minutes

It is a late, late night in Brisbane....

It is remarkable it's taken this long

Simon Smale profile image

The Brazilians have been behaving like thugs and largely getting away with it. Finally, a red card!

- Tanya

I'm stunned there have only been three (now four) yellow cards in this game.

86' Red card Brazil!

Vitória de Jesus Santos Calhau is sent off for a second booking.

This one appears to be for stopping Ellie Carpenter from taking a free kick quickly.

She makes her way slowly off.

In a game that has deserved plenty of yellow cards and seen very few, that's almost a soft decision...

85' Chance Brazil

Simon Smale profile image

Brilliant from Brazil there.

The counter attack was swift, but they then took the pace out of the attack.

Then a cross comes in and a flick right in front of Arnold, who has to make a snap save.

82' Raso lucky to avoid a yellow

Simon Smale profile image

Not ideal there from Hayley Raso, swiping down Aline Gomes and then attempting to pick her up.

She was unimpressed by the Brazilian's lack of interest in standing on her two feet, and pushed her over.

The referee ran over to her to tell her to calm down - but that's all.

80' Chance Matildas

Simon Smale profile image

(Getty Images)

Made by the perseverance of Hayley Raso!

She chased down a long ball from Yallop and never gave up on it, winning the ball back in the corner and sliding a pass inside to Carpenter.

She though was felled by a brilliantly-timed tackle in the penalty area to deny her a chance of finding a teammate or getting a shot away.
