First home builds are always special and it was no different for Frank and Vlasta Drahos.

The couple, who arrived in Australia as refugees from Czechoslovakia in the 1940s, decided to build a home that would “last forever”.

Their five-bedroom Enfield home at 22 McCusker Ave has not only stood the test of time, it has been so well preserved that you would think it’s still the 1950s.

From a booth-style table in the kitchen – reminiscent of a diner – the timber cabinetry around the home to the woodwork on the ceilings and walls, it’s a fine testament to the past.

The couple’s son Peter Drahos, who is currently assisting his elderly parents with the sale of the property, said the home is unique in its own way.

“My father, who is now 100 years old, built this home with help of a Czech architect and that’s why the mid-century design has a European feel to it,” Mr Drahos said.

“During that time, materials were scarce. My father, who was also in the building trade, sourced the bricks for the home from an old hotel that was being demolished. Those bricks had been fired in London. He used around 45,000 bricks in the construction of this home.”

Sitting on a large 1350sqm allotment, the two-storey, double brick home boasts an open-plan lounge and dining area and comes with a granny flat as well. The bedrooms are spacious and the master suite also opens on to a balcony.

“There’s a lot of room in the home. It was a great place growing up,” Mr Drahos said.

“We enjoyed playing in the garden area outside. We were lucky, as back in those days people were still building smaller homes on bigger blocks. Now, it’s quite the opposite.”

Presented to market by Ray White Norwood’s Tristian Kennedy and David Upadhyay, the home will go to auction on July 24.

“I haven’t come across such a unique design in recent times,” Mr Kennedy said.

“It’s a very well maintained property that enjoys proximity to local amenities as well as parks and nearby reserves.”
