In what's expected to be the only formal debate of the 2017 campaign, Colin Barnett and Mark McGowan will try to convince the West Australian public that they have what it takes lead the state out of growing unemployment, rising debt and a crumbling resources boom.

Who is the better leader? Mark McGowan and Colin Barnett face off in what's expected to be the only formal debate of the 2017 state election.

And it's a wrap

Thanks for joining us at WAtoday for the leaders' debate.

Lastly, we would love to hear from you who you think came out the winner of today's debate by participating in our poll.

And join us again on Thursday when the campaign trail moves on.

Do we know anything new now?

Well. That was insipid and uninspiring. Both spent most of the debate blaming each other like school kids who just hit a cricket ball through a window.

Will voters be swayed by what both men said and change their minds when they head to the polls?

On that performance I doubt it.

The winner? Maybe the Premier because he only mentioned Western Power once.

With less then three weeks before we go to the election it looks like it's going to be a tight contest.

But as other elections have shown, if the swing is on, it's on and Labor could find themselves in office for the first time since 2008. We will find out on March 11. Good night. I'm off to have a beer and lay down!

Final say

The Premier blames McGowan, saying "I don't rubbish the state like McGowan."

"I will lead WA through a growing transition.

Have some face? Faith.

McGowan: "Thanks everyone at home."

Especially people he lives with in Rocko.

Some last jabs with mentioning again that WA now has the worst unemployment, lost its AAA credit rating. He offers stable leadership and a plan to improve for transport.

C'mon Western Power one more time.

Premier blames Labor for voting against mandatory sentencing.

Parker: "Hasn't the Libs stance on drugs simply not worked?"

Premier: "Meth is an evil, evil drug."

Last question

Meth: "How did the government get it so wrong on meth?"

McGowan opposes everything according to the Premier.

Mandatory sentencing. Labor opposes that.

McGowan: "We have the worst rates of meth use in Australia."

He says he wants life terms for meth traffickers and meth prisons.

Jobs

Premier: "Unemployment has been difficult."

No mention of I 'live with people in Nedlands'.

McGowan opposes GM and lots of other things according to the Premier.

Jobs again from McGowan. Has he actually answered a question?

McGowan: "Jobs. Enliven manufacturing industry".

"WA was outraged when Malaysians built footbridge to new stadium."

"More science jobs. Endorsed by Barry Marshall."

Bugger me. Is he the bloke that got an ulcer and then fixed it?

Mark McGowan looks a bit rattled.
Mark McGowan looks a bit rattled.

Parry: "Why won't you let treasury run a ruler over your costings?"

McGowan: "Vote out the government that created the problem."

McGowan: "I live in Rockingham with people. What other suburbs don't live with people."

Are there aliens in Perth? A vote for Labor is a vote for aliens.

Western Power. Number 9.

"Who will replace you as leader?", Adshead asks the Premier

Costings question for the Premier. He says he has a clear plan.

Labor is all over the place.

McGowan says Premier has a mess of things.

Western Power. 7 or 8. Lost count.

The Premier quizzed about his retirement plans.

McGowan says he understands fiscal management. Here comes Metronet for the first time. Disappointed it didn't pop up earlier. Improve education system.

Premier says Labor has promised $4 million dollars. Liberal party has a plan, Labor doesn't.

Premier mentions Western Power.

Matt Keogh MP @mattkeogh seems to be still at work watching the debate - wonder if he's happy with Mark's performance?

Unions again

Parker harps on with unions again:

"My record is clear", says McGowan.

"I will act in the interests of Western Australians."

Western Power sitting on 6.

The Premier on education:

"Every single year Liberals have had a teacher in front of every class."

"If Labor win government the cabinet will be packed with union officials. Bill Shorten will ring in the changes."

Parker asks Mark McGowan: "If you are elected Premier, what favours will you give the unions?"

Bam.

McGowan says "I am my own man".

Western Power again. Number 3. I'm guessing it could go as high as 20.

Western Power. Number 4. Western Power. 5

McGowan says the premier promised for 25 years he wouldn't sell Western Power. Boom. Number 2.

Broken promises. We need a fresh start. Boom again.

Strutt. Trust issue between Premier and voters.

We have looked after mental health, disability, says the Premier.

Up steps Strutt.

Broken promises: How can people of WA trust the government given its litany of broken promises such as Ellenbrook rail, Western power and electricity prices.

The Premier says WA has the third lowest electricity cost in the country. But it does come at some cost and pain.

Here the Premier goes with the GST. Whammy.

We have invested in the future. Would anyone want us not to invest in schools and hospitals?

Adshead says Libs will be wiped out in poll in the state's daily tomorrow.

McGowan says if you want to deal with soaring debt, vote out the government.

We are not going to sell Western Power. Let's see how many times that is said tonight. Ring the bell Monica when he says Western Power.

We thought this gif would go along nicely with Geof Parry's first question - Dirty Deals ...
