Western Sydney Wanderers have been fined $20,000 after being found guilty by Football Federation Australia (FFA) of bringing the game into disrepute after their fans had displayed an offensive banner during its match against Sydney FC.

The homophobic banner, which appeared during last Saturday night's Sydney Derby at the Olympic stadium, depicted a blue-faced male, suggested to be Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold, engaged in a sexual act.

"The actions of the Western Sydney Wanderers spectators responsible for displaying the banner and the ensuing celebration of the banner on social media were completely unacceptable," A-League head Greg O'Rourke said.

The FFA could have activated a suspended points penalty on the Wanderers, but decided instead to impose the fine.
