Fulltime at McDonald Jones Stadium: NEWCASTLE 34 GOLD COAST 26

NEWCASTLE have snapped a 19-game losing streak with an emotional eight point win over Gold Coast in which Jarryd Hayne suffered an ankle injury.

The star Titan went into the game amid controversy over an in-house fine but he lasted only a few minutes of the seesawing round two clash. The seriousness of his injury is not yet known.

A Trent Hodkinson conversion followed by a Nathan Ross try ended more than 300 days without a win for the Novocastrians and continued the fabled superpowers of the team on their annual Old Boys Day.

"We had some old boys here and they paved the way for this club," winger Ross told Fox Sports. "We want to thank everyone for paying their hard earned to come out each week. We want to show it's a new era."

78 min: Ross try, Hodkinson goal

And the losing streak is over! The Knights keep the ball alive on the left and Nathan Ross finishes off perfectly, skirting back infield to touch down halftway between the touchline and the goalposts. The Goal is there! Newcastle 34-26.

74 min: Matautia try, Hodkinson goal

The Knights haven't won in more than 300 days but they are in front! Peter Matautia crashes over next to the posts and the conversion is to snap a 19-game losing streak. Trent Hodkinson does the job. Newcastle 28-26.

68 min: Hurrell try

Konrad Hurrell fields a little chipped kick and touches down in one motion to edge his side ahead. It's his second and was positively humdrum compared to the first! Ash Taylor is unable to add the extras. Gold Coast 26-22.

Now it's the Knights' turn to get some injuries. Brock Lamb is off; he's had a fantastic game so far. 22-22.

60 min: Taylor goal

The Titans get a penalty and opt to tie the match up. Ash Taylor is just to the left of the posts. It's there. 22-22.

54 min: Stone try, Hodkinson goal

Another debutant scores. Brock Lamb sends Sam Stone hurtling through a gap on the right. He's a tall Lakes United junior. The conversion is good. Newcastle 22-20

46 min: Greenwood try

How about that? Twelve pairs of hands before St Helens import Joe Greenwood scored for the Titans, with a cross-field kick coming after the ball was tossed around like a beach ball from side to side. The video refs have plenty to watch but eventually they flash the green light. I love that expression "promote the football". Like "Hey! this is a football. It's great. Footballs rule!" The conversion is unsuccessful. Gold Coast 20-16.

43 min: Ross try

Winger Nathan Ross is over for a Newcastle try in exactly the same spot where Roberts-Davis scored only 15 or 20 minutes ago. It's a hard conversion and the ball fails to find the mark. Anthony Don has a torn pectoral muscle and will be out for several weeks. 16-16.

Second half underway: Newcastle v Gold Coast

Just repeating: the Titans will have to make do with one reserve for the entire second half. They almost scored just then. Gold Coast 16-12.

Halftime at McDonald Jones Stadium: Gold Coast 16 Newcastle 12

JARRYD Hayne heads a lengthening casualty list for Gold Coast as they stormed back from 12-0 down to grab a four point lead at halftime against Newcastle.

The Knights were sitting pretty at 12-0 after 23 minutes at McDonald Jones Stadium, with Hayne off the field with an ankle injury which will prevent him returning.

But consecutive touchdowns to hooker Karl Lawton and centre Konrad Hurrell tied things up and then debutant Tyrone Roberts-Davis snuck over in the left corner to grab an unlikely lead.

Winger Anthony Don and Lawton are also injured, leaving coach Neil Henry with one reserve.

38 min: Roberts-Davis try

It had to happen - Tyrone Roberts passes to debutant Tyrone Roberts Davis and the winger scores. The play came straight from the scrum-base with a nice in-and-away from Tyrone Roberts (the first one) doing the damage. Ash Taylor is unable to convert. Newcastle 16-12.

35 min: NO TRY Newcastle

Centre Peter Matautia is over in the shadows of the grandstand and of halftime for Newcastle. The kick came from Trent Hodkinson. Anthony Don is off injured for the Titans, as is Karl Lawton. That means the visitors are down to one reserve. Jarryd Hayne won't be back. 12-12.

32 min: Lawton try, Taylor goal

After Newcastle was denied a try because of off-side chasers from a bomb, hooker Karl Lawton picks up a pass that was layed back, rugby union style, by a team-mate and scoots 10 metres to score. Taylor is successfull with the conversion. 12-12.

31 min: NO TRY Newcastle

And Newcastle appear to have hit back almost immediately. A Brock Lamb bomb has been allowed to bounce and Ken Sio pounced on it. But chasers were ruled to have been offside. The Hayne injury is apparently an ankle. Newcastle 12-6

29 min: Hurrell try, Taylor goal

Anthony Don has athletically scooped the ball over his head and back into the in-goal, where it was claimed by centre Konrad Hurrell. The kick came from Ash Taylor and the video referees are checking interference and offside. It's a try.'Halfback Taylor kicks out to the right and the ball curves back in for a successful conversion. Jarryd Hayne is off with an injury of some sort. Newcastle 12-6.

22 min: Stockwell try, Hodkinson goal

Mitch Barnett throws a lovely short, flat pass to Jack Stockwell who crashes over to the left of the posts. Stockwell is 25 and hails from Campbelltown; his previous club was St George Illawarra. Trent Hodkinson converted. Newcastle 12-0.

17 min: Elliott try, Hodkinson goal

Brendan Elliott is over for the Knights and the video referees Jared Maxwell and Ben Galea are checking whether he got the ball down cleanly and whether there was an obstruction. I don't think he got it down - it's sprayed out and should have been disallowed. Trent Hodkinson is successful with the conversion. Newcastle 6-0.

A near thing there with Newcastle winger Ken Sio going high in pursuit of a Brock Lamb kick burt just failing to ground it in the right corner. 0-0.

Joe Greenwood is down after receiving an accidental elbow from Nathan Ross. He's gone for a head injury assessment. Newcastle 0 Gold Coast 0.
