PLANT Tiles are set to be the next big thing in the landscaping world with husband and wife team Franc and Jenny Coonan the brains behind the young company, Plant Tiles Australia.

Formerly one of the largest suppliers of turf in Queensland, the Coonan’s saw a gap in the landscaping market and seized the day.

Now their company is setting trends on the Australian market and hoping to crack the international market soon.

“We saw that lot sizes were getting smaller and smaller and we believed there was a market for a niche product,” Mr Coonan said.

Plant tiles are no mow ground covers cultivated and delivered in shallow trays measuring 330mm x 330mm and only 22mm deep.

The trays are filled with media and seeded with either low growing herbs or perennials.

Mr Coonan said his buyers were finding all kinds of uses for the product with one buyer purchasing 52 highly fragrant plant tiles and cutting them into circles as placemats for a wedding.

Other buyers are using them to place between pavers, for apartment rooftops, childcare centres, courtyards, around pools and barbecue areas.

“It continues to surprise us the way people are using the product,” Mr Coonan said.

The company started selling Plant Tiles around two years ago, with time being spent identifying which ground covers suited the varying Australian climates.

With the growing trend for homeowners to downsize and seeking low maintenance outdoor areas, there’s no doubt this product is going places.
