Adam Falzon filmed his encounter with a Thrifty truck rentals staff member.

A TRUCK rental company is in damage control following a tense incident when a staff member appeared to accuse a customer of failing to fill up a tank of fuel when returning the vehicle.

Adam Falzon said he was forced to accompany a Thrifty rentals employee to a petrol station on Saturday where, far from being empty, the staff member could barely get any fuel in the tank.

Thrifty has now apologised and refunded Mr Falzon what he claims was several hundred dollars in excess charges.

Mr Falzon filmed the entire encounter on his mobile phone, at one point calling the Thrifty employee the “biggest w*****r”. He has since recognised he was, himself, “ungracious” but he said he was stressed after being compelled to return to the servo and that a staff member had “raised an arm” towards him off camera.

The video begins as Mr Falzon and the staff member drive to the service station in South Melbourne.

“The Thrifty employee is now suggesting I’ve ripped them off and I haven’t filled their vehicle. He’s saying I lied to them,” the customer said.

“Now we will find out who is right and who is wrong. He’s going to look like the biggest w****r.”

The two quarrel about whether or not the tank is being filled properly before fuel starts spilling onto the forecourt.

Fuel then spills all over the floor.

“Did it click, did its click?” an excited Mr Falzon can be heard saying on the video. “You can’t get fuel in it, look it’s overflown. Look at that, he’s trying to get fuel in it and there’s fuel over the floor”.

The Thrifty employee tells Mr Falzon he owes the company the cost of seven litres worth of petrol but the customer disagrees and says he won’t pay for fuel that’s on the floor.

Talking to radio 3AW, Mr Falzon since recognised he could have handled the situation better.

“I wasn’t the most gracious but the frustration. I’ve seen it done before, this was really my only option to prove my point as they had my credit card.

“You’d love to not be so ungracious but the lead up was so offensive. One of the staff raised his arm to me, he was quiet abusive to me. I had my wife in the car with me and my children.

“When I proved my point I felt so victorious I couldn’t hold back.”

He said he was still owed $200 by Thrifty who had put an extra penalty charge on his credit card.

On Monday, Thrifty issued an apology.

“This was an unfortunate incident and is contrary to Thrifty’s commitment to our customers.

“Both the customer and store management were contacted early this morning and the issue has been resolved.

“The customer has received our apologies and a full refund for the inconvenience caused. The staff involved have been counselled and will receive further customer service training.”
